technology Southampton-based repairer SMS is making some significant investments to enhance environmental performance and operational efficiency. Tis includes an ultra-high pressure blasting unit for removing old coatings and a transportable flushing rig. Te rig is claimed to be unique on the UK south coast.
It can flush 300 litres per minute at 40bar; and is fitted with a thermostatically controlled heating and cooling. Te unit also benefits from a particle contamination sensor module which detects and monitors the contami- nation levels of the medium being used.

Turbochargers RCCL extends service
cooperation Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL)’s existing service agreement with Wärtsilä – a 10-year deal signed in 2013 – is being extended up to 2028. Under the terms of the agreement, Wärtsilä is tasked with optimising the maintenance of turbochargers for the RCCL fleet, providing OEM spare parts, workshop services and technical assistance. Tis newly extended agreement between RCCL and
Wärtsilä, signed in June 2018, covers a total of 196 engines installed in 46 cruise ships, the majority of which sail in the Caribbean and Europe. A large part of the RCCL fleet of vessels is equipped with Wärtsilä’s condition monitor- ing technology, which transmits real-time information about engine condition to a Wärtsilä Expertise Centre for analysis. Tis allows for predictive maintenance planning and optimisation of operations.
UK Mechanica Utilities sets up
repair business Mechanica Utilities’ newly formed company, Mechan- ica Marine, will specialise in supporting the maritime sector in the UK and overseas, with a particular focus on shiprepair and maintenance activity. Te subsidi- ary has acquired and redeveloped a marine engineer- ing workshop just outside the Port of Dover and aims to fill a gap in the market leſt by the winding up of local ship repairer Burgess Marine. Mechanica Marine’s aluminium welding and fabrica-
tion team has already undertaken fast ferry repair jobs in Greece, while other clients to date include Boskalis Westminster, Wärtsilä, Holyhead Towing, Incat, Svitzer and the Port of Dover. Te new business plans to target legacy clients of Burgess Marine along the south coast.
USA Alabama yard sale
Epic Alabama Shipyard has purchased BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama, and its shipyard facilities in Mobile. Epic will provide a range of shiprepair and maintenance services to its customers from the yard, which includes the Alabama Dry Dock, one of the largest in the Gulf of Mexico. Epic is owned by Epic Companies, a Houston-
based offshore construction and decommissioning group. Te parent company says it plans to service vessels within its own fleet at the newly acquired Mobile yard in future.
