Oman Albwardy Damen opens


in Sohar UAE-based Albwardy Damen is now offering a range of afloat, workshop and diving services at Sohar Port and Freezone in Oman. Tis is the fourth operational base for the company, complementing its existing facilities in Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. It is an important milestone for the port as well, as this is the first time a shiprepair company has chosen to establish a presence in Sohar. Te range of services available in the Omani port


will comprise hull and deck steel repairs, including pipework, hydro-blasting and painting, as well as mechanical equipment maintenance work, such as engine overhauls and hydraulic and electrical repairs. Albwardy Damen riding squads will also be availa- ble to meet maintenance and repair requirements onboard vessels, while ships calling into Sohar will be able to call on the nearby Albwardy Damen Diving operation in Fujairah for support.


Ferries SMS completes fast


ferry refit Southampton-based ship repairer, SMS, has completed work on Brittany Ferries’ Normandie Express in Cherbourg, using the Port of Normandy Authority’s ship liſt. Tis is the company’s second major high speed craſt refit in France in a matter of months and involved a three-week stay for the ferry on the 3,000tonnes capacity ship liſt. SMS has a partnership agreement which allows it to use the facility in Cherbourg on a ‘turn up and go’ basis. Te refit involved structural aluminium repairs,

including hull inserts, and repairs to the under-hull planking and jet room. All the vessel’s sea valves were overhauled, and the anodes replaced; the main engine coolers and lube oil pumps were changed; and a series of fire-main and insulation repairs and replacements were carried out. In addition the SMS engineering team undertook maintenance of the ride control system’s hydraulics and made repairs to fire door frames.


UK RFA support contract wins


Merseyside-based shipyard and engineering company Cammell Laird has won two 10-year contracts to support the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RF), worth an estimated £619million. Tis is described as being a massive boost for the company and is expected to enable it to continue to invest in its workforce, apprenticeship programme and infrastructure. The deal, part of the so-called Future In Service


Support (FISS) programme, will see Cammell Laird maintain nine ships of the RFA fleet. Te vessels involved are RFA Fort Victoria, RFA Fort Austin, RFA Fort Rosalie, RFA Wave Knight and RFA Wave Ruler, which the yard has supported in the past, as well as four newer ships, Tidespring, Tiderace, Tidesurge and Tideforce. Te A&P Group has also secured a substantial Future


In-Service Support (FISS) contract from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Tis covers the Bay Class vessels, RFA Mounts Bay, RFA Cardigan Bay and RFA Lyme Bay, as well as RFA Argus and Ocean Survey Vessel HMS Scott. Te new contract will be delivered by the A&P Falmouth yard, which has an established track record of servicing the RFA fleet. To date, A&P Group has carried out eight major refits and 117 maintenance packages on RFA ships, completed 39 overseas work packages and managed and installed more than 500 alterations and additions packages.
