Methodology for PCF Calculations of Lubricants, Greases and other Specialties

Applicable Standards and Alignment with External Guidance Manufacturing of Lubricants, Greases, and other Specialities

This methodology is intended as guidance for PCF calculations for manufacturing lubricants, greases, and other specialities, in compliance with ISO 14067:2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard (GHG PPS).

Where other guidelines or Product Category Rules (PCRs) exist for manufacturing, they will be reviewed annually by the Joint Sustainability Committee (JSC) of UEIL/ATIEL in accordance with Clause 6.2 of ISO 14067:2018. The JSC may assess their acceptability with the UEIL/ATIEL methodology to ensure harmonization between stakeholders, promote transparency, and support consistent application of PCF calculations across the lubricants industry. A list of PCRs or industry guidelines reviewed and accepted by the JSC will be provided in the Annex.

Upstream Value Chain

Suppliers to the lubricant industry can have links to other industries, such as the base oil, chemical and additive sectors, and will be asked to provide PCFs for their products to enable calculations by the lubricant industry.

All PCFs from suppliers shall comply with ISO 14067:2018 and match the corresponding cradle-to-gate scope of the supplier. In addition, all PCFs shall fulfill the mandatory reporting requirements and should also fulfil the optional reporting according to Section 6.

Industry guidelines and PCRs in the upstream value chain can help to harmonize calculation approaches, improve data comparability, and enhance transparency across sectors. This methodology provides guidance for the acceptance of PCFs that have been calculated based on other methodologies.

Examples of existing sector methodologies and PCRs relevant to the lubricant supply chain include:

• Credible third-party–reviewed PCRs developed on sector-specific or industry- specific guidelines based on ISO 14067:2018, e.g., Plastics Europe PCRs.

• Together for Sustainability (TfS) PCF Guideline for the chemical and additive industry.

• API TR 1533 for the base oil industry.
