Methodology for PCF Calculations of Lubricants, Greases and other Specialties

8 Terms and Abbreviations

The following section lists the terms and abbreviations in Table 5 and Table 6, respectively. Table 5 Terms and Explanations

Term Allocation Explanation

Practice of partitioning the input or output flows of a process or a product system between the product system under study and one or more other product systems

Base oil

Base oils are essential lubricant components derived from petroleum, synthetic sources, or renewable sources used to reduce friction and protect machinery.

CO2 equivalents Cut off

Unit for comparing the radiative forcing of a GHG to that of carbon dioxide.

Specification of the amount of material or energy flow or the level of environmental significance associated with unit processes or product system to be excluded from a study. (ISO14040)

Declared Unit

Downstream Scope 3 emissions

Functional Unit Gate-to-gate

Quantity of a product for use as a reference unit in the quantification of a partial PCF. (ISO 14067:2018)

Downstream emissions are the emissions related to customers, from selling goods and services to their distribution, use and end-of-life stages.

Quantified performance of a product system for use as a reference flow. (ISO 14040)

Assessment scope which includes part of the product’s life cycle limited to the production of the studied product and excluding the acquisition of materials, the use or end-of-life stages. (WBCSD)

GHG Emissions

Emissions from a process or system which release GHG into the atmosphere
