Methodology for PCF Calculations of Lubricants, Greases and other Specialties


Nature of the methodology


The methodology document is a guidance document available to all lubricant industry stakeholders. Users apply the methodology on a voluntary basis and nothing in the methodology document forms part of a contract.

UEIL and ATIEL cannot be held liable for the correctness of the results generated by using the methodology and the use of the results by lubricant industry stakeholders.

In comparison to the previous version 1.1 of the document (dated 14.10.2024), the following updates and modifications have been made:


1. New Sections Added: o Section 2.2 Applicable Standards and Alignment with External Guidance introduced.


o Section 6 subdivided into Section 6.1 (Reporting Requirements for Lubricant Manufacturers and Suppliers) and Section 6.2 (Additional Reporting Requirements for Suppliers).


2. Sections Updated: o Section 2.1: Acceptance hierarchy for PCRs and industry methodologies revised and relocated to the new Section 2.2.


o Section 2.3.2: Clarified that secondary data may be used if primary data collection is not practicable, in line with ISO 14067.


o Section 3.1.2: Specified that three Data Quality Indicators (Technological, Temporal, Geographical representativeness) are mandatory, while Completeness and Reliability are optional, consistent with other industry guidelines.


o Section 3.3: Mass allocation reclassified under Step 3(allocation via physical relationships), as mass is considered an inherent physical relationship in lubricants, greases, and specialty manufacturing.


o Section 4: Added an example for determining the biogenic and total carbon content in the product.


3. Minor Wording and Clarification Adjustments: o General wording improvements have been made throughout the document to enhance clarity and consistency. These changes do not affect the overall content but improve readability.
