REDUCING DEFECTS: HOW LASER-TEXTURED MOULDS IMPROVE PRODUCT RELEASE

Laser job-shop Fimark describes how laser texturing can give clear business advantages over traditional methods. By using laser- textured moulds, plastic moulders can significantly reduce defects, improve product quality and streamline their operations.

Common defects in plastic moulding include:

sticking, where components adhere to the mould causing damage or deformations during removal; warping, where uneven cooling or release can affect the shape and functionality; and surface imperfections, where rough textures on the mould can leave marks or imperfections on the finished product.

Laser texturing can help overcome these challenges in different ways:

• Precision Surface Control: Laser texturing allows the creation of precise micro-textures on mould surfaces reducing friction and surface adhesion for a smoother release.

• Targeted Texturing: Specific areas of the mould can be textured to address trouble spots where sticking or defects are most likely to occur.

• Enhanced Consistency: By reducing sticking and other issues laser-textured moulds promote a more consistent and repeatable production process.

Unlike chemical etching or sandblasting, laser texturing offers unparalleled control over texture depth, pattern and position. Patterns can be tailored to specific product needs allowing for enhanced functionality and aesthetics.
