AMADA'S PARTNERSHIP-BASED APPROACH TO MANUFACTURING SUCCESS
Founded in 1989 with just two members of staff, Greenfield Engineering has evolved into a prestigious contract manufacturing business, supplying fine-limit sheet metal products to high-end clients across the UK. It now operates from two sites totalling close to 100,000 ft² of floor space. Greenfield’s latest substantial investments include two additional advanced specification AMADA automated machines, one for laser profiling and the other for punching (both with automated sheet storage), as the company further expands its capacity. The company is also adopting the latest AMADA software solutions.
Greenfield Engineering’s commitment to embracing advanced automated machinery elevates customer confidence and ensures cost efficiency. Demonstrating this philosophy is the arrival, in December 2024, of an AMADA VENTIS-3015AJ 4kW CNC fibre laser cutter with ASLUL twin-tower automation and an AMADA EM-3612MKII CNC punch press with ASIII MP tower. Supporting these new additions, the company is transitioning to AMADA VPSS4ie Blank and Bend software packages and becoming the first UK company to integrate AMADA’s new LIVLOTS monitoring software.
“Our new cutting-edge machines, automation and software represent a substantial capital investment with AMADA,” states company founder and director Frank Green. “We already have an impressive portfolio of automated AMADA machines, but we’re not replacing any of this equipment – the new machines are all additional capacity."
Frank adds: “Our staff, customers and suppliers form an important tripod upon which we base our success. Take any one away, and the tripod fails and falls. AMADA totally understands this strategy, placing them ahead of other suppliers. Their focus on customer service and technical support is truly world class.”
Frank concludes, “We leverage our position with customers via the technology we use. Selling our services and promoting our AMADA equipment ultimately helps us win new business because of AMADA’s market reputation. We continually focus on the attitude that we’re only as good as our last delivery, so we don’t ever get complacent. Our goal is to remain humble and customer-focused as we strive to be world class and deliver added-value, high-quality sheet metal solutions.”

MAZAK IS THE RIGHT PARTNER FOR A TRUE ONE-STOP-SHOP
Matthew says his optimum machine footprint is eight machine tools and four laser machines. “At the moment and we’ve got six lasers, but two of them will be going as we move over to the high-power fibre machines.” The move to fibre is down to productivity which has led to further expansion. Matthew says “With the fibres and the new layout, we have a far more efficient machine shop.”
And with efficiency comes productivity. “The laser market has become ultra-competitive in the last year. If we didn’t have the OPTIPLEX lasers we wouldn’t be getting any work as we couldn’t compete. We’ve basically been able to win more jobs because we’re faster.” Matthew adds that the real value in the Mazak relationship lies in the advice he gets.
Precision machining and fabrication one-stop shop, DC Developments, Norfolk, began its working relationship with Mazak in the late 1990s. “The business started out doing precision fabrication in the 1980s” says Matthew Campbell, Director at DC Developments. Laser processing capability was added to fabrication in the late 1990s with a Mazak STX laser, with a further two machines purchased over the next few years." At the same time, the company increased its CNC machining capability with a Mazak lathe in 2000, followed quickly by a twin-spindle lathe and milling machine in 2003.
Ian White, General Sales Manager – Laser Products for UK, Eire & National Distributors at Yamazaki Mazak, says: “DC Developments’ all-round capabilities are not so common in the subcontracting world. It is fantastic to see them investing in the latest high-power Mazak laser technology and combining this enhanced capability with their extensive range of Mazak machine tools.”
