David Clark (’97) was recently admitted into the National Academy of Arbitrators. Those selected bring extensive expertise and achievement to the Academy, with each having met the rigorous criteria of completing at least 60 decisions in a six-year period and demonstrated the highest level of ethical conduct in their professional endeavors.
R. Matthew Rickman (’97) has joined the Massachusetts law firm Mirick O’Connell’s Litigation Team as a partner where he focuses his practice in the areas of white-collar criminal defense and civil litigation. He has successfully represented individual and corporate clients at all levels of both state and federal court in a variety of matters including manslaughter, narcotics, civil rights violations, healthcare fraud, public corruption, computer fraud, and copyright infringement. In each year since 2011, Rickman has been named a Super Lawyer.
Debra Silverman (’99) of Hodgson Russ LLP was named to Crain’s 2023 Notable Leaders in Accounting, Tax & Audit List. The inaugural list recognizes top leaders in the field who serve as a mentor to others and promote inclusive practices in the workplace and was also elected as a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, an honor reserved for those leaders who have made an exceptional contribution to the profession.
2000s
Sean Sullivan (’01) rejoined Williams Mullen’s Environment & Natural Resources Group as a partner in the firm’s Raleigh office where he advises clients throughout the country regarding major federal environmental programs, with a particular emphasis on hazardous waste, Brownfields redevelopment, the
Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and emerging contaminants. He’s also been recognized by Chambers USA for environment law.
Jonathan Bowser (’02) was made partner in the Intellectual Property practice group of the DC offices of Haynes and Boone, LLP in Washington, DC. Jon focuses on patent litigation disputes before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and federal district courts. He has been counsel in more than 100 AIA trials before the PTAB, representing both patent challengers and patent owners, and he litigates appeals before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also assists clients in counseling and patent procurement, with a specific focus on electrical, computer, networking, and medical device technologies.
Zanydria Conyers (’02) was named SVP and general counsel for the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. In her role, Conyers will lead all aspects of the organization’s legal department, serving as a key resource for business and basketball leadership and the organization’s affiliate entities. Conyers brings more than 20 years of legal experience to the organization, having most recently served as deputy general counsel and managing director of legal affairs for the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).
Rahul Shah (’02) took over the helm of Fragomen’s headquarters in Matawan, New Jersey, where he will continue to represent multinational clients across a broad range of industries, including soſtware development, audit, tax, and advisory services, human capital management solutions, e-commerce and energy—supporting them with a wide range of nonimmigrant visa
programs, permanent residence matters and compliance services. He serves as a member of the firm’s IT Consulting Group and Pro Bono Ambassadors network, while also guiding and supporting several DEI initiatives.
Margaret “Peggy” Cascino (’03) joined the Consumer Financial Services team of Hinshaw & Culbertson’s New Jersey office as a partner. A seasoned litigator, Cascino has 20 years of experience representing financial services companies in state and federal courts on a wide array of litigation matters, including foreclosures, property disputes, loan origination and servicing, bankruptcies, and real estate transactions. She also defends clients against claims related to various federal regulations, including FCRA, FDCPA, RESPA, Truth in Lending Act, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, and Equal Credit Opportunity Act.
John K. Kim (’05) was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as Chair of its statewide Commission on Professionalism. The commission is tasked by the Illinois Supreme Court with promoting a culture of civility and inclusion among the state’s lawyers and judges, to improve the justice system for the people of the state. John is currently the associate general counsel at Edward Jones. Formerly, he was in-house counsel at State Farm in Bloomington.
Michele C. Lee (’05) was recently promoted to general counsel of Pinterest. Additionally, in October she was recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of their Influential Women 2023.

Juan Fernandez-Barquin (’08) was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to clerk of the court and comptroller for Miami-Dade County, Florida, the largest trial court in the state, and fourth largest in the country.
Áquila Mazzinghy (LLM ’09) published his book Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, investigating the legal nature and criminal responsibility of the terrorist group Islamic State/DAESH’s crimes against civilians in Iraq, especially Christians. The book explores whether these crimes constituted genocide or persecution as crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute and draws on hundreds of cases from international criminal tribunals and offers a significant and original contribution to the study of genocide and crimes against humanity. This work is the culmination of five years of research and several years of editing and writing.
