The son of an academic, Nicely always considered teaching as a profession, and eventually returned to AUWCL as an adjunct professor. He and fellow international trade lawyer John Magnus devised a class called The US Trade Regime, which they started teaching in 2007 and have since taught every fall.
“We shared a sense that law schools were teaching the subject through an international law lens when what most graduates in the field end up practicing is domestic trade regulation,” he said. “We are able to provide valuable perspective as practitioners, and students use us as sounding boards for entering the field.”
Once back on campus, Nicely’s involvement at the law school grew. When coaches were needed for the World Trade Organization moot court competition, he and Magnus stepped forward. Among their earliest students was Yujin Kim McNamara ’11, who was drawn to the opportunity to interact with so many practitioners in the field of international trade. “She was a very capable oral advocate and a star competitor,” said Nicely. “We stayed in touch throughout the years,” as he and Magnus do with many former students.
Now McNamara and Nicely are partners together at Akin, where they help lead the firm’s trade remedy and trade policy practices. “These relationships can be lasting, and do come full circle,” said McNamara. “When Matt and I reunited at Akin, I was so proud to be able to call my coach my colleague and partner.”

This year, another one of Nicely’s former students, Lauren Talerman, also became a partner in the Akin international trade practice. There are now eight AUWCL graduates in Akin’s trade group, four of whom he had in class. “It’s gratifying to know that our work as adjunct professors has spawned such an interest in the international trade field among our former students,” said Nicely, “and it’s a treat to have so many AUWCL grads as colleagues at Akin.”
