The “Free Your Mind” festival, on King’s Day in Breda, is an event that Reinier was equally
conversation. sold-out
excited about during our The completely
festival, which took place on April 27th, saw Reinier play a 4-hour live set at a very special location – a runway at the international airport in Breda to a crowd of 27,000 people at one stage.
As we talk about the unparalleled Dutch offer of top festivals, the conversation turns to Reinier’s own festival, “Karren Maar”. (read: “Karren Maar” is a Dutch way of saying ‘Let’s go!)
We wanted to know everything about the origin of the event and what to expect from the first edition. Reinier explained that the idea came during Covid and, funny enough, from a running gag. He told us the funniest anecdote;
“We rented a cottage in the
province of Friesland with a few friends to have a small party. We had a real DJ booth and a great sound system. We were really in a kind of weird villa among the potato fields. And it started with me talking in a fake Frisian accent all the time, which people +found really annoying. We were, of course, not completely sober anymore. And at one point, I came up with ‘Karren Maar’ and kept shouting it. I found it hilarious at the time. And after I had persisted all night, everyone was so done with it and told me ‘if you don’t shut up now, we will have to kick you out of the house.’ They were really irritated. So I wasn’t allowed to say it anymore. And at that moment, slightly intoxicated, I was super thought:
riled up, and I’m going to push this on social
media to annoy these people even more. As a joke of course, but then it suddenly caught on everywhere.”

Reinier
goes on to share that his
catchphrase was quickly picked up by fans, and before he knew it, “Karren Maar” was the concept for his second own festival.
This summer, Reinier is back and ready to break his own record with his upcoming live set at “Karren Maar”. After an amazing turnout of almost 15,000 fans at his first event, “Live Now” in 2022, our Dutch Techno hero is taking on the challenge to beat his personal record and set a new world record. With more than 11 hours of live music, created in the moment with synthesizers and drum machines, this production is not only an incredible effort but also a logistical nightmare.
“Live performance is a completely
different story than DJ sets. DJing can be done for 11 hours if you’re in the mood. But live is a whole different level of intensity. When I’m up there, I’m constantly creating something new, the music has to be made in the moment. If I stop, nothing happens. So you’re continuously playing melodies on synthesizers and tapping rhythms on drum machines. It’s really intense and that is why not many people do it.”
Reinier will be performing the entire day on the main stage, and a second stage will be added to make the festival even bigger. There will be plenty of chill areas and entertainment to truly put this event on the Dutch festival map.
In addition to “Karren Maar”, Reinier is
creating a new audiovisual show that will be fully linked to his live set. This interactive show will be displayed on a large screen that is connected to all the movements he makes on his synthesizers and drum machines. All of these movements will be artistically visualized on the screen. Combining all the elements to produce a unique live experience.
