“MEMO” è stato un lavoro molto, molto lungo e travagliato, ma anche pieno di momenti istintivi e fulminei. È stato un processo molto creativo e, soprattutto durante il periodo di COVID, abbiamo cercato di tenere a bada le ansie e le paure di quel periodo per concentrarci su ciò che avevamo den- tro in termini di cose da dire e di cose non dette. Come ho detto prima, è stato un processo molto lungo per un album. Abbiamo iniziato a lavorarci nel 2019 e nel 2023 è uscito. Abbiamo messo mol- to di noi stessi nel processo di scrittura, e “MEMO” è stata una specie di palestra”.


VITA PRIVATA E ISOLAMENTO: L’IMPATTO DELL’ETNA


La solitudine dell’Etna ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella formazione


di Mathame.


Descrivendolo come un intenso laboratorio, il duo ha lavorato alle strutture durante il giorno e ha composto la musica di notte. Ispirata alle sonorità techno, la loro musica racchiude la potenza di un vulcano e la poesia di un’eruzione. la poesia di un’eruzione, un tema che continuano a trasmettere nel loro lavoro.


“Sul vulcano è stato un momento, un laboratorio intenso in cui ci siamo sentiti un po’ monaci, di cui “Ora e Labora”. Di giorno lavoravamo alla stru- ttura e di notte scrivevamo la musica. Abbiamo sempre iniziato con quello che ci piaceva, Tech- no con un’atmosfera eterea e sognante, perché ci faceva sentire bene e sentivamo di poter dire qualcosa attraverso il nostro modo di fare. E spesso ci dicono che nella nostra musica si sente la potenza di un vulcano e la poesia di un’eruzione. Ancora oggi, cerchiamo esattamente di indicare questo senso del sublime”.


LE REGOLE DI SONIC IN STUDIO: CREARE BRANI DI CARATTERE


Nel loro studio, i Mathame si attengono a regole rigorose, ridefinendo il tempo come una qualità espressiva e dinamica piuttosto che come una griglia rigida. Ogni traccia e strato è meticolo- samente realizzato come un personaggio a sé stante.


“Una delle prime regole è iniziare a vedere il tempo come una qualità espressiva, una qualità dinamica, e non più come una griglia o una regola marziale. Ma soprattutto tendiamo sempre a fare di ogni traccia, di ogni strato, un persona- ggio con una sua funzione e una sua storia, una sua vita specifica. Poche concessioni ai trucchi, alle ‘salse’, agli effetti propri dei produttori dance”.


IA E COLLABORAZIONE VISIVA: SVELARE IL PROCESSO ARTISTICO DI “MEMO”


La grafica dell’album “MEMO” ha preso una pie- ga innovativa: è stata progettata dall’intelligenza artificiale sulla base dei testi di Mathame. Ques- ta collaborazione con l’intelligenza artificiale è diventata un processo di ricerca, che utilizza l’IA come fotografo dell’inconscio.


”MEMO” was a very, very long and troubled piece of work but also full of instinctive and light- ning-fast moments. It was a very creative process, and especially during the COVID period, we tried to keep the anxieties and fears of that time at bay to focus on what we had inside in terms of things to say and things left unsaid. As I said before, it was a very long process for an album. We started working on it in 2019, and in 2023, it came out. We put a lot of ourselves into the writing process, and “MEMO” was kind of a gymnasium.”


PRIVATE LIFE AND ISOLATION: MOUNT ETNA’S IMPACT


The solitude of Mount Etna played a pivotal role in shaping Mathame. Describing it as an intense workshop, the duo worked on structures during the day and composed music at night. Inspired by Techno sounds, their music encapsulates the power of a volcano and the poetry of an eruption, a theme they continue to convey in their work.


“On the volcano, it was a moment, an intense


workshop in which we felt a bit like monks, of which “Ora e Labora.” We worked on the structure during the day, and at night we wrote music. Always started with what we liked, Techno with an ethereal, dreamy feel because it made us feel good, and we felt we could say something through our way of doing things. And we are often told that in our music, you can feel the power of a volcano and the poetry of an eruption. Even today, we still try exactly to indicate this sense of the sublime.”


RULES IN THE STUDIO: CRAFTING CHARACTERFUL TRACKS


In their studio, Mathame adheres to strict rules, redefining tempo as an expressive and dynamic quality rather than a rigid grid. Each track and layer is meticulously crafted as a character on its own.


“One of the first rules is to start seeing tempo as an expressive quality, a dynamic quality, and no longer as a grid or a martial rule. But above all, we always tend to make each track, each layer, a character with its own function and its own story, its own specific life. Few concessions to tricks, to ‘sauces,’ to the effects proper to dance producers.”


AI AND VISUAL COLLABORATION: UNVEILING “MEMO’S” ARTISTIC PROCESS


The album art for “MEMO” took an innovative turn as it was designed by AI based on Mathame’s lyrics.


This collaboration with artificial


intelligence became a research process, utilizing AI as a photographer of the unconscious.
