THE VISUAL SONIC ODYSSEY: GROUND BREAKING AUDIO VISUAL SHOW

Mathame’s foray into the audio-visual realm unveils

a groundbreaking experience for

enthusiasts seeking an ‘expanded’ dance en- counter. The duo shares insights into the creative process behind their recent AV show, a mesme- rizing journey that transcends the present moment. Drawing inspiration from film music, early Trance, Progressive, animation cinema, and art history, Mathame aims to elevate the audience into a trance state, a feat evidenced by the unexpected success and sold-out shows of their recent AV venture.

“We aim to offer an ‘expanded’ dance experience where our audience can be enabled to escape and transcend the here and now through an audiovisual-induced trance state. This year we started experimenting with some techniques, with surprising results, both musically and visually. The aesthetics are very much related to film music, early trance, progressive, animation cinema, and art history. All of this was the AV Show that we planned and tested this year: it was unexpectedly received beyond all expectations and saw sellouts everywhere. But very soon we will be ready for a new show where this concept of ‘new’ or ‘expan- ded’ dance music will be taken to another level.”

MELODIC TECHNO PIONEERS: EVOLUTION AND BORDERLINES

From the early influences to the present, Mathame reflects on their unintentional role as precursors of Melodic Techno. They describe Melodic

sophistication, emotion, and cinematic elements, a departure from the vast dance scene. Surprisingly embraced by a

their explorations in tracks like “Skywalking” laid the foundation for a genre that evolved and dissolved its purity over time.

“We think that Melodic Techno is an evolution of dance in a sophisticated, emotional, cinematic, somewhat more challenging direction. A bit borderline compared to the huge dance scene. Surprisingly, it has had an incredible public response, and this is probably because it res- ponds to an evolutionary need of the people of the night, and not only. The roots are many and go back to Krautrock, for example, soundtracks, Vangelis, Jarre, Aphex, and Autechre. We sim- ply didn’t know we were doing Melodic Techno; it was what we liked to do. For example, “Skywal- king” was the result of technical research for its own sake, as a nerd. Then, of course, the genre dissolved its purity, contaminating itself, which is fine and natural as anything that goes beyond its premises. We, however, are already ready for more.”
