Scott Hamilton’s Inspiring Story Our keynote speaker, Scott Hamilton, has had a challenging life. From growing up with a pituitary brain tumor that stunted his growth to losing his mother to cancer, Scott endured a lot. However, he never let these adversities hold him back. Instead, they served to inspire him to reach the highest standing in male figure skating: winning the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics after winning four consecutive World Championships.

But life has its surprises. In 1997, Scott was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Again, Scott showed his true colors—he became an activist, launching education and survivorship programs and running fundraisers to finance research. He still coaches figure skating and shares his passion with those in his community.

“The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”

Scott shared an incredible message with the attendees: Who are we doing this for? For Scott, it was his mother. He told a heart-wrenching story of his mother doing everything in her power to come see him skate. In the senior living industry, we have a real impact on people’s lives, and we should never forget who benefits from the work we do.

Just as Scott’s mother inspired him toward greatness, we can inspire those in our industry to reach their highest potential and make a tangible impact.
