How Volvos have changed. Their estateswereonce loved for theirspace ratherthan theirstyle.
They were squared-off vehi cles which stood out from the crowd like an analogue motor in a digital world. Not so any more. They still
major on space and practical ity but the V6o tested here is a dynamic-looking vehicle. The prettiest estate on the
road? Well, that might be go ing too far but it’s certainly handsome. It sums up Volvo’s recent
past. The company, now part oftheChinesecompanyGeely, has survived the recent global meltdown which is more than can be said for its Scandina vian rival Saab. Sales have reached a
20-year high and the company is turning out a flurry of ever more efficient models.
What’s more, Volvo created
the first all-road version of its popular estates with the suc cessful Cross Country range. Now this crossover range has been extended to saloons. No-one could have predict
ed how successful the Cross Country range could be. Cer tainly back in 1997 when the first versions appeared, no- one predicted a saloon ver sion. Tested here is, for me,
one of the highlights of the Volvo range, the V60. There is no pretence with this car. It is an estate, not a Cross Country or a crossover mod el, but it is good-looking and spacious.
car will do so because of the boot space which is good, but for an estate it is also a car with excellent driving character istics. It feels like a saloon and
corners sweetly, while the economy is good and the top speed and 0 to 6omph times are very good. The engine is a diesel
which, even in these days of whispering diesels, came as a surprise. It feels very much like a petrol but has the broad band of torque which is satis fying. Inside, the cabin is typical
Volvo: very neat and logical. Everythingworkswellwithan incredibly uncluttered layout. How they manage to squeeze so many functions into so few buttons is commendable. It’s a fairly large car but the
styling makes it feel compact. For example it is 4,628mm long which is not far short of the bigger V70 (4,814mm). It is, however, wider and con siderably lower which makes
the ride and handling much better. The V60 is a good load car
rier. The boot is 430 litres and rises to 1,241 litres with the seats down; which compares to 575 litres and 1,600 litres for
theV70. The V60 tested here is well-
equipped. Power steering, sta bility control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, climate control, powered windows front and rear, cruise control, park ing sensors front and rear, a plethora of airbags and satel lite navigation. Everything, in fact, that a business user might expect. i'r Volvo’s sales increased 26 per cent between 2013 and 2014 and show no sign of slotv- ing. Demand for Volvo’s new in-house Drive-E powertrains with class leading emissions and performance is one of the key reasons. The XC60 was Volvo Cars’
best-selling vehicle globally with 136,993 cars, followed by the V40/V40 Cross Country with 110,528.
