9 22 I CUTHEROEADVERTISER&TIMES VALLEY ENTERTAINMENT A tale of martyrs, museums and monasteries!
An exciting newyear-long ex-, hibition is being staged from today-April 23rd, which is al so St Georges Day and Shake- spere’s Birthday - at historic SamlesburyHall. Its centrepiece is “The Ped
lars Trunk”, which had been walled up in a priest hole at
SamlesbuiyHaUfromthei6th century, where it was discov ered in the mid-igth Centu ry some 200 years later.-The Trunk was bought by a private individual at an auction held at Samlesbury Hall and later sold to Stonyhurst College, who still own it to this day.
Now, by kind permission
of the college, it is return- ing.home for the exhibition. Elizabethan Lancashire was a hotbed of recusancy-refus al to attend the new Anglican church services - and follow ing the banning of Catholic priests in theisoos they had to
disguise themselves to carry on with the ceremony of their
religion. The Pedlars Trunk was central to this subterfuge.
