have been eligible for the General Service Medal (Suez Canal Zone) after six months, but he was unaware he was entitled to one and didn’t ev er receive a medal. When he was demobbed

in 1955, he joined Lancashire Fire Brigade, in Preston, and was stationed at several fire stations during his service - his last station being Nelson, where he spent 26 years as a firefighter and was also the recipient of the Fire Brigade Long Service Medal. It wasn’t until Ken met Ben Robinson, one of.the

three founder members of Burnley and Pendle Ex-Serv ices Club, based in Burnley, and he discovered he should have been awarded a medal in 1951/52 - some 64 years ago. Ben said: "After having a

conversation with Ken, I dis covered he had served for about two-and-a-half years in Egypt, but didn’t receive

an award. I knew there was a campaign medal for this con flict and 1 decided to apply for his medal on his behalf. “We were delighted when

he heard it was agreed by the Ministry of Defence and Ken was entitled to it.” Next Monday (April 27th),

Ken will be presented with his long-awaited medal at

Guilty plea to another assault on wife

A 40-year-old Langho man assaulted his wife during a Sunday afternoon drinking session. Blackburn magistrates

heard thatStevenDennis Hill was so angry' h e was red in th e

face and the veins in his neck were sticking out.

And his wife was so scared

that at one stage she consid- eredjumpingout of the bath room window to escape. Hill, of Petre Wood Cres

cent, Langho, pleaded guilty to assaulting Michelle Hill. He was remanded on bail un til April2gthfortheprepara-

tion of a pre-sentence report. Mrs Enza Geldard (pros

ecuting) said at some stage during the afternoon, Hill had locked himself in a bed room. He was angry when his

wife demanded to know what was going on and came out

and punched her twice. Mr Richard Prew (defend

ing) saidtherehadbeenacon- victions for assault against the same victim in the pasti2 months and it was accepted the magistrates would need a pre-sentence report before sentencing.

A kind-hearted Clitheroe boy thought about others before himself and ended up raising a lot of money for a good local cause. Seven-year-old Matthew

Taylor completed a cycle ride from Trinity Methodist Church to Chatburn Method ist Church raising £240 for Ribble Valley Foodbank. Matthew, who attends

Pendle Primary School, com pleted the5.2-milesponsored cycle ride and according to his father, Gavin, he loves nothing more than whizzing around

the forest trails in Gisburri Forest. His other hobbies include

gymnastics, football, swim ming and playing lego. Gavin added: “Matthew didn’t want to give up chocolate for lent, so we suggested he could do something to help people in stead. He knows about the Foodbank as we often put something in at collection points and he doesn’t like the idea of being hungry. We’re really proud of Matthew, we never thought he would raise so much money.

“When Matthew took the

money along to the Foodbank he met someone he knows going to collect a food parcel, the whole thing has made him think about how lucky he is and how hard the position of others can be.” Ribble Valley Foodbank

manager Ruth Haldane said: “Thanks go to Matthew for fund-raising for Ribble Val ley Foodbank he raised a bril liant amount of money, and it is a great achievement! This will help people in crisis need across the Ribble Valley.
