Ribchester AmateurTheatri- cal Society - The RATS - are performimg panto this month in Ribchester Village Hall. TheRatshavebeen putting

.on pantos since the mid 1970s, and most of the traditional panto titles have been visited more than once in The Rats’ il- lustrious40-plusyear history. But there is something

very different about this, year’s show. “Little Red Riding Hood” is not one of the tradi tional panto stories. While it might have been performed somewhere, its writer and di rector.- 23-year-old William Thomas - has never seen it

and would be interested to

; hear from anyone who has! Though young in years,

William is quite an old Rats hand, having appeared in sev-

' eral pantos, cabarets, revues and plays, both on The Rats stage and for Ribcaged Pro ductions. Even so, to write a new panto script,- cast i t ;

\ and then direct it would be a . daunting task for anyone, but William is confident that th e .

- Rats will pull it off. As he puts it: “I have got a

great and experienced team working with me and the en thusiasm is amazing”. Little Red Riding Hood-

a wo

(intriguirigly subtitled “The Wolf of Water Street”) is only

' William’s second writing and directing venture, following thevery successful “Walk with Miss Potter” promenade piece from last year’s Ribchester Festival. While he has stuck largely

:. to the traditional storyline, he has introduced themes and characters to make it more Panto-like. Where would you fit a Panto Dame into the sto ry? Well you will have to go along to discover how David Procter, donning the wigs and frocks again, makes his mark! The baddy is obviously The

Big Bad Wolf, played with rel ish by Steven Johnson, while the eponymous heroine is

played by Emma Smith, the latest in a long line of this fam

ily to star in a Rats production. Grandma features, of,

course, and is played by Tony Woolmington, another whose family has a long association with The Rats and whose mother remains mother the society’s main make-up lady. There is a wolf catcher too,

played with gusto by Robin Simmons, and you will need to get a programme to see and remember, let alone pro

nounce, his name. Love in

terest is in there as well, with Frances Lamburn (Delilah) and Daniel Riding as the love-

able-but-daftEugene. - The Rats have alwaysisup-

portedandericouragedyouhg-

sters, not only through their Young Rats plays and shows,

but also in the promenade pieces during the Ribchester Music and Arts Festival and,

naturally, in panto too. This year’s show provides

fantastic proof of the tal ent and experience of The Rats younger members, with named parts played by Ee- anor Robinson, Chrissie Col- linson and Luke Rogerson, to
