By fax Repairs give new lease of life to hall

Essential work costing £45,000 has been complete to give Salesbury’s popular public hall a new warm roof to keep it going for years to come. Salesbury Memorial Hall

was built in 1928 on gifted land, built by the people for the people. It forms the “hub” of village

life with hundreds of fami lies using the facilities, both within the hall and on the sur

rounding land. • The hall has remained

largely intact and untouched, otherthanforessentialmain- tainance and upkeep, but the roof finally required major refurbishment. Having last ed almost 90 years, it had no insulation and had begun to leak. Thanks to the generous

support of the Lancashire En vironmental Fund,TheDuchy

ofLancasterBenevolentFund, the Harold and Alice Bridges Charity and The Houghton Dunn Charitable Trust work on the roof was completed last month. As well as full.insulation

of the roof the Westmorland green slates were removed, cleaned and reinstated. The project cost £45,000

and was completed on time and within budget. No more

leaks and a warmer hallis the result! The Trustees and Manage

ment Committee of Salesbury Memorial Hall wish to thank all parties who supported this major project: Contractors Brian Cooper Builders Ltd and Randles roofing of Todmor- den for their excellent work, and Finlay Hodge from Com munity Futures for his advice throughout the project.

Booths, the family owned re gional food and drink retailer with a store in Clitheroe, re corded modest gains on its Christmas results. The business saw a to

tal sales increase o f+0.6% in the six week Christmas trad ing period (ending January 3rd). Like-for-like sales for the same period decreased slightly, by-0.8%. In a highly competitive re

tail climate, the growth was at tributed to Christmas home

delivery and collect in store orders, which rose by 34%, as more and more Booths cus tomers opted for online or dering. Chairman Edwin Booth

commented: “Against the backdrop of a challenging re tail market coupled with food deflation, sales at Booths held up reasonably well. “As a comparison, our per

formance in Christmas 2013 was the best ever with sales up by over +6%, so we had a

big sales target to hit in an increasingly volatile grocery market.” : 2014 was a pivotal year fo r .

Booths as the company tr i alled a “Deliver to the Nation” scheme, which delivered or ders to remote parts of Scot land, London and the South of England - a first in Booths’ 167 year history. . ■ “The sharp increase in click and collect orders did really stretch us, as it did our competitors, added Mr Booth.

• “Our staff put in some pretty heroic efforts to get orders out, and I’d like to pay tribute to the supreme efforts made by everyone at Booths. We’ve learned a great deal from this Christmas, and have taken tremendous encouragement from the affection our cus tomers have for Booths. “With one season of UK

delivery under our belt, we’re looking forward to refining and expanding our service in 2015.”
