will get worse I am not a racist but! Glad to get that out of the way, now can we have a sensible debate about the proposed multi faith development at Old Langho? Several years ago I wrote to the Highways Agency expressing my c&ncerns about driving from home at Brockhall Vil lage to the A59 access road alongside Northcote. Then and to this day I regular ly meet cars, vans, lorries and buses travelling in the middle of the road. I requested that a white line be painted along its entirety as a precautionary measure. The highways agency re sponded in a timely manner, explaining that the road was not wide enough (I assume there are guidelines for di mensions for this to be done but they would paint lines on the bends, as a safety aid. This they duly did. In the meantime matters have deteriorated. We now have • approaching four hundred homes, many with several cars, at Brockhall Village. We have two busy stud or stable businesses on the access road, with large num bers of slow moving horse box es and transporters visiting, and increasing num bers of mounts are ridden on the road. In the event that the football field is in use, it only needs a handful of cars to park on the road for congestion to occur. I regularly sound my horn a t . cars (probably visitors) at tempting to turn right at the Northcote, A59 junction when it is a left turn only. I t is a very dangerousjunction. If this development goes ahead I predict mqjor conges tion, frustration and fatalities. How the developers at Brock hall Village have got away with' this state of affairs remains a mystery to me and I should be interested to receive an expla nation from what is laughingly called Planning. Oops sorry! I promised not to mention that again after the election results. . I must ask do the people advocating this development actually knowhow busy the Asgis? Other than traffic and conges tion 1 have no issue with the proposal. If Blackburn with Darwen

Council should like to pay to widen Northcote Road and build a roundabout to access the A59 then more power to them, otherwise find a safe alternative. ■

HOMES PLAN

Tied hands and best interests... Last week your article ‘Huge New Homes Plan for Clithe- roe’ stated that “campaign ers are calling on everyone in the town to object to the proposal.” Can I point out that this

development has been approved and no amount of protest will change that. It is part o f the RVBC’s

Core Strategy which has to deliver the amount of homes over the next 20 years that the GOVERNMENT insists on.

Without the Core Strategy

in place we would have less defence against the develop ers and the decisions of cen tral Government over where houses will be built. Before I became a coun

cillor I objected to this and helped members of the coun cil try and construct a plan ning argument against it; there were several council lors who opposed it, includ ing some on the planning committee. Despite that, it was ap

proved as the central part of the number of houses the Ribble Valley HAS to build. On top of this the spokes person said: “Lancashire

County Council does not have any plans at the mo ment to build any extra High Schools to accommodate the extra children coming’ into Clitheroe” and he may be correct, but I would point

out that this is outside the RVBC’s and LCC’s remit and is subject to decision by the Education Authority- they will choose which site is best for a new school and also when it is to be built. Current legislation says

that it should be a free school or an academy and at present that may not be in the town’s interest. I’m sure that offic ers of the RVBC will be in dis cussions over this. Finally, as aresponse to the usual derogatory com

ments about the council, borough councillors, the planning dept, and the plan

ning committee, I’d like to • add that we are not a ‘dicta torship’ but a democracy. Those of us who are fortu nate enough to get elected do

our best to serve the entire community and try to deal with, and understand, the difficult decisions the coun cil has to make and also the reasoning behind them. CouncillorMarkFrench

FESTIVAL FURY

Police come in for criticism 1 havejust read an article by

Julie Magee in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times which is in relation to the Beat Herders festival. It has comments from Clitheroe police inspector Ian Cooper saying that the crimes, thefts, assaults and drug taking was not “over the top”!! I might add that I had my house burgled that weekend and the experience has left me nervous in my own home! I live on my own and my possessions that were stolen were purchased through hard work and gifts from family, not by walking into someone’s house and stealing them. These are of sentimental value to me and are irreplaceable. ' So I think his comments are unacceptable and a disgrace • to the police force who are meant to protect us!

PROTECT LIFE

Bill is not the answer to care V Grasham in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times (Thurs day, July 30th) wants our MP

to vote for the Assisted Dying Bill proposed by Rob Maris MP on September nth. The sick, elderly and disabled people are very worried. They fear being pressurised to end their lives, it could save NHS money.

Doctors, who have been trained to protect life should

not be expected or allowed to take life because someone who has lost hope requests it. The NHS should concentrate its efforts to provide better palliative care. Our hospices do this very well

and our hospitals are getting there. It might be better if the elderly

or sick could be cared for at home.

Of course, the sponsors of the

bill will promise that it will in- elude full protection of ethical standards.

This, like other matters of life and death, will depend on all

doctors and patients relations being of the highest ethical

standards. This is unlikely to happen when there maybe

wills or budgets to follow. When the law is broken the

victims will not be able to present their case for justice. The taking of human life has been forbidden from time im memorial. Most faith groups will still support that tradi tion. Our doctors are doing very well at increasing life expect ancy, long may they continue.

TRUE COLOURS?

A ‘Northern Poorhouse’

The Tory Government has quickly shown its true view of the north - the Powerhouse was a good catchphrase but I suspect only intended to ensure that northern votes returned the Tories to power in the House of Commons. The recent announce

ment on rail projects has quickly revealed the Tories’ true intentions - HS2 and the Great Western electrification have been protected, with northern projects deferred (without any commitment to a date). Perhaps it’s all in the accent - not Northern Powerhouse but Northern
