talk .entitled “The Seven

Deadly Sins" was given to the Clitheroe and District Probus Club by visiting speaker Fa ther Michael Burgess. Father Burgess lightened

the mood by launching into a quick-fire introduction where

joke followed joke and the au dience quickly relaxed. But craftily interwoven into the humour were examples of the deadly sins - not so fiinny and with a serious message.

£ Audience rapport was paramount, with many ques tions fired at the audience by the speaker. Part way through the pres

entation, each member of the audience was given a coloured print of a famous painting by Hieronymous Bosch and then each member was challenged to identify the sin depicted in each of the seven sections of the circular painting and the speaker provided detail to ex

plain the illustration. Father Michael expertly

appliedhisexperiencein min istry training, preaching, and his love of the theatre in get ting his message over to a re ceptive audience. He is a Trustee for the

Lymm High School Trust, and concludes, in 2016, fouryears as a Foundation Governor. . After a short question time

the vote of thanks was given by member Jim Stephenson.

How we’ve communicated

Professor Nigel Linge of Sal ford University was notjoking when he told Clitheroe U3A members that he proposed to make a whistle stop tour of 2,50oyears of communication in 40 minutes. Speaking at a steady pace

and with copious illustrations he didjust that, covering all as pects from Roman Times up to the present day. Beginning with an image

of Hermes the messenger of theGods.heouthnedmethods

of communication from clay tablets to the present postal system which handles over 60 million items daily.' He even touched on the

American Pony Express, mak ing the audience laugh with its advert for riders: “Wanted, young skinny and wiry fellows willing to risk death daily- or phans preferred”. On the theme of transmis

sion he again covered methods from earliest times leading up to the telegraph system and

eventual voice recording and the telephone. He described communi

cation in space and how the World Wide Web established in 1998 has grown so that in 2014 there were sixty trillion pages available. In conclusion he indicated

howmachinesnowcommuni- cate with each other. Superbly illustrated and entertaining throughout, this was an excel lent and informative presen tation.
