• thusiasm, Harriet Roberts’ presentation to Clitheroe Civic Society on James Dix on’s lifetime work fascinated everyone. The founder of Blackburn
Orphanage, Dixon came to Blackburn seeking work as a carpenter. He was horrified at the abject poverty of thou sands of children, so with his friend John Walkden, he built the Ragged School in Black burn in 1881. They provided “Food and God” to hundreds of these children.
-GET TOUCH
ixon James Dixon then went
on to build the orphanage at Wilpshire which opened on January 24th, 1889, with 23 children. All the records of all the 2,500 children who came to the orphanage were found in the cellars and this archive is the treasure which was found. The children had a strict
but not severe life, attending Salesbury school, growing vegetables, playing with the pet donkey and learning sport as well as routine housework and cooking.
James Dixon met his wife
Jane at the orphanage. Since James was frequently absent raising funds, Jane control led the daily running of the place and they brought up their three children there. Throughout his life, James Dixon showed loving care to all the children and became known as Grandpa Dixon - surely his most treasured ac colade. The next meeting of Clithe
roe Civic Society is April 13th at 7-30 pm in the Ribble Valley Borough Council Chambers.
