. . HHBEHE recent warm spring H mornings at Kitridding

« ; have been amazing: • ® : After the last three

months of wind and rain, it

r. . is a pleasure to sit out at the , I-.; front of the cafe with a mug of coffee watching the sun rise

• over the Howgills. . There is so much noise;

. . of frogs croaking, all facing . the rising sun to enjoy the ■ ., warmth, there are numerous —

the pond in the garden is full -

.. breeds of ducks on the lake playing about like kids in a

. .. swimming pool, and we have plenty of smart pheasants that - have out-witted the :■ '

_b ird s . .. and they all want to be heard.

• ' '

r guns and there is, of course, ■ , the resident choir of song

, -r

There was a tragic accident recently near us involving ' :

• a farm quad on a narrow back road. The quad rider, a

mother of three, died from her injuries. • . -

We use a quad around

the yard as a tool to do a job - carrying buckets of nuts, . bales of hay, scraping slurry and moving calves in a trailer.

“ d *h* .

Out in the field we use it for feeding sheep, looking at '

stock and for travelling to jobs.: such as walling, fencing or hedging.

< But until an accident occurs,

farmers don't take note of the risk these vehicles pose. When I had a moped nearly

40 years ago I always wore a crash helmet, but when you are just jobbing around the

.yard, a helmet takes longer to put it on than it takes to do the task.

, A road bike only goes forward, a quad has to go

backwards sometimes, and

it is very difficult to reverse a trailer as your head tends to turn in the helmet and creates a blind spot.

. But the main reason farmers don't like wearing helmets is

you can't hear what's going on around yo u .: ■

In the yards it could be ‘

children playing somewhere dangerous, out in the field it may be animals in distress and

probably be more farmer-

. if you can't hear them they will - probably go unnoticed. A cycle helmet would

friendly. , On farming matters

start lambing in two weeks'-- " time, and the sheep are now— .

enjoying a daily feed of sheep nuts.

, - - . Matching feeding to

expected births is the reason' for scanning; if a sheep having a single is overfed she will be over condition at lambing, plus her lamb will have grown

too large for her to have an easy birth:,'"-.. Fed correctly, however,

singles and twin lambs bom-*^ .‘will be of similar size for

an easy birth, triplets and quads will be smaller. Those : expecting triplets are on a kilo' a day, twins get half a kilo per day, but those only expecting one larhb feel they haVe been . badly done to, as they only ‘

get a taste. " ' If you would like to see the sheep before lambing, or in'- -

. April see lambing in full swing, I am happy to show customer^ around on Sunday mornings " during April, meeting at 9 v

o'clock for a chat and walk for about an hour, weather permitting.
