Golfers on the18th green at Clitheroe in Regional Open qualifying (s).

There was disappointment for the local competitors in the Open Golf Regional Qualifier held at Clitheroe Golf Club on Monday, all of whom failed to qualifyfor the nextstage.

On a sparkling summer day the course was looking at its

best and conditions were ideal as the 102 hopefuls set off in pursuitof Open glory, but the Ribble Valley course proved a tough challenge to many of the entrants with a third of the field returning scores of 8o and above. Of the 10 qualifiers only four managed to break par

and the eventual cut-off came ‘ at the one-over-par 72 mark

. with four players involved in a play-off for the one remain ing qualifying spot. Leading the field with a

•3;under-par 68 was South Af rican amateur Nicolaas Ar- noldi.

Of the local players, Coun

ty champion Mark Young of Longridge and Clitheroe

just missed out with a 73 and Daniel Nutter was two shots further away. Joey Lamb of Wilpshire carded a 73 but is only reserve number 49 for the Final Qualifier with little realistic prospect of a call-up. Lauraine Wall.and Ma-

sham’s Alison Sayer won tClit- heroe.’s Ladies’ Invitation with an impressive 43 points. Tracey Bentley and Alex Georgia Forrest had to settle

for second place after cards. . Jeanette Dowdy came from

Stonyhurst Park to partner Valerie Fairless and their 41

points put them in third. Keith Pedder and Ken Man

tle as they both cruisedin be low their handicaps in the Seniors Stableford. Pedder took top spot with

a one-point margin over Man tle and George Stoddart took third with 37 points. John Hacking and Ron Ma-

sop pipped Gary Speak and Mike Tattersall for first prize in Saturday’s Four Ball Better Ball with 44 points. Vince Killeen and Keith

Ratcliffe were third with 42.. Ian Shaw played astormer when Mytton Fold Golf Club held their Frank Hargreaves MemorialTrophy in glorious

weather on Sunday. His 4i points was the highest of the day, but his moment of success was somewhat outshone when Linda Clegg scored the lowest of the day when she holed out in one at the first! Captain Peter Main came

home second, just one shot behind the leader, and took the Seniors Trophy. Third ' was John Whittaker with 39 points on a card playoff. Frank Hindle scored the

only two of the day on his fa voured ninth hole. In the ladies’ section it was

anotherwinforHazelSellars. Her 39 points put her three

points clear of Allison Nuttall , while Abbie Clegg finished third with 32 points. The beautiful weather on
