Harriet provides an insight into work and past of charity

The University of the Third Age was given a presentation on the work of Child Action North West, which is based in the Wilpshire building thatformedpartofBlackburn Orphanage, by funding man ager Harriet Roberts. Harriet related how she

had come across what she de- scribed as a “treasure trove” of materials in the cellar of the old building. These included ledgers,

reports and photographs which gave some insight into the history of the insti tution, but were also saleable assets. They eventually raised

£37,000 for the charity. Harriet told how the

founder of the orphanage, James Dixon, came to Black burn aged 23 and began to res cue needy children from the streets of the town. He then set up the or

phanage with his wife, Jane, and they raised their own . children alongside the or phans who they cared for, providing a loving family at mosphere. Photographs show the children at lessons, doing

chores in the kitchen, laundry and garden, but also having fun on sports days and excur sions and riding the family’s donkey, Pongo. Harriet stressed that the

same social problems exist today, which is why the char ity needs constant funding to continue and maintain its work.
