Oakhill pupils are given a taste of how real scientists work
Year 9 pupils at Whalley’s Oa khill College have spent the last year forming initiatives to gain a Fairtrade status for whole school and gained suc cess when they were awarded a certificate from the Fair trade foundation, writes Millie Higham and Jessica Chatburn. Initially they formed a
steering committeeand wrote a Fairtrade policy, which led to the opening of a Fairtrade tuck shop every Friday. The whole of Year 9 gave
two assemblies, one to the prep school and one to the senior school, with informa tion about Fairtrade. Actions included bringing
the Fairtrade projects into the classroom plus combin? ing literacy, numeracy and RE in prep. For the seniors Fairtrade was integrated into French, science and RE and the school was supported by Booths supermarket in Clit heroe, which allowed pupils to conduct a survey and to go product testing.

■ James’ CE Primary School and these were distributed among the classes. Pupils then set about
planting the seeds in the pots and displaying them within the school grounds. It is hoped that they will grow and provide lots of col our around the school. Headteacher Mrs Patti-
son said: “We are extremely grateful to Sainsbury’s for providing the school with these seeds giving all the pupils a wonderful oppor tunity to learn about plant ing and growing.”

Pupilsfrom Oakhill College ion theirtrip to Skipton. Pupils give Skipton the thumbs up
Pupils in years three and four at Whalley-based Oakhill Col lege skipped off to Skipton for the day to study the town for a geography topic. They spent the morning exploring the market and the
high street (complete with shops, a war memorial, the parish church and the castle) before moving on to the canal. Following a leisurely lunch
in the sun by the canal side, they walked around the back
of the castle along a footpath that leads into Skipton’s wood land area where they identi fied different types of trees. Everyone agreed that Skip-
ton was a lovely place to live in and to visit.
