f> Press Complaints Commission replaced by new body
Like all the regional press, this local newspaper has
K always setthe highest ethical
u standards. C
We are committed to serving our community with honesty, integrity, and sensitivity - while never being afraid to tackle in-
- • •
g justice with uncompromising vigour.
We take a tough line in holding local decision-mak-
vjv ers to account. Ensuring that the public interest is proper ly served by those politicians who seek to serve you is fun damental to our role. But we are here to protect
the innocent and vulnerable as well.
That’s why we have always
$ gone out of our way not to identify children in conten tious stories, to avoid intrud ing into people’s private lives unless there was an over-
• ^helming reason for us to do iso that best served the inter-
• ests of our community. Reporting people’s news
accurately and in context without the need to resort to sensationalism is also second
nature to the way we have always operated. We invest heavily in edito
rial training through the Na tional Council for the Train ing of Journalists- and getting our stories right, of telling
them in the right way, and treatingyou with respect, are critical to this. Of course, with the best
will in the world, occasion ally we make a mistake. Untilnow.wehavebeenreg-
ulated by the Press Complaints Commission and committed ourselves to its code of conduct which is designed to ensure we meet the highest standards of accuracy and respect for those whose stories we report.
From this week, the Com
mission was replaced by a new regulator IPSO - the In dependent Press Standards Organisation - and we warmly welcome and support it. IPSO has been established

as a result of the Leveson in quiry into press standards following the phone hacking scandal at a national tabloid, the now-closed News of the World. Although Leveson found
the local press had done noth ing wrong, he called for a new regulatory body to be estab lished by the industry which would provide genuinely in dependent regulation of its members. If you believe we ever fall
short of the high standards we set and have breached the code of conduct, then y6u should contact IPSO - www.

latest car is most definitely a Soul. But the fresh model has a raft of changes that put it light years ahead of the out going model in terms of com fort, space, quality and driving pleasure. The Soul - a Californian
design studio dream back in 2008 - is now bigger, roomier and boasts improved driving dynamics, thanks to its new cee’d based chassis.
With design cues taken
from the Track’ster concept car of 2012, it now presents arguably even more dramatic styling than the original com pact SUV crossover. Unlike the majority of odd
ball car design (think Fiat Mul- tipla, Nissan Qubo, Daihatsu Move) the Soul has lasted the test of time and made itself part of the street furniture we most admire. It is a bit of a
_ Marmitecarin thatsome peo ple hate it while others see it as the best thing since sliced bread but there is no denying the facts. The Soul went on to become a top five car in its class and market leader in the United States and China. But in truth, the all new
second generation model blows the original out of the water. Proportionally, the Soul
has been tweaked for the bet ter. With a lower roofline and a wider stance, it now looks squatter and more sporty on the road. And just as impor tantly, interior quality has been considerably upped with soft touch surfaces abound-
ing, while the oft criticised hard ride has been replaced by a suspension system that makes it the equal of anything in class.’ Kia has struck while the
iron is hot and the new Soul has arrived at the perfect mo
ment to take advantage of the. boom in the B-segment SUV market. Annual sales of this type
of car in Western Europe are forecast to rise from around 318.000 last year to more than 600.000 by 2015. Just over a
quarter of European B-SUV customers are British. Now with a longer wheel
base, wider and more squat, new Soul provides more pas senger and luggage space; new seats offermoresideways and side support; there is more

head and shoulder room for the driver and front passen ger; and there’s more leg and knee space for rear passen gers. Kia has built in more ex
pansion foam, top, which * makes the cabin noticeably quieter. Perhaps best of all, the Soul
i.6CRDiItestedis much more fun to drive. Steering is more. , responsive, the chassis pro- 'J' r vides a supple ride and com fortable platform and the soft-shifting six-speed man ual gearbox is the best in class I have come across. With brilliant detailing ®
and excellent fuel economy, new Soul proves the irresist ible force. Rarely has the baton been handed over in such style and so effectively.
