Mazda3 - or to use its Sunday name, the All-New Mazda3 - isafine-lookingcarthathas been given a rakish newpro- file for 2014. With its low roof, and rising waistline it looks
like nothing else in its class. As we ll as g e t t in g a more streamlined appearance, the pushed-back A-pillars and door-mounted wing mirrors contribute to its increased ae-
/ ro-efficiency and thus better fuel consumption. The down side of the styling is some loss of visibility from the rear: the optional reversing camera
is probably worth investing in. ■
This third generation Maz-
da3 is available as a 36-strong lineup - 21 hatchback and 15
fastback (saloons) - which
share three petrol engines and a diesel with a choice o f six- speed manual or automatic transmission.
Claims of up to 72.4mpg are
made, thanks to Mazda’s ener gy-efficient Skyactive technol ogy but, as we all know, these are rarely achievable and, in the real world, they are much less than this. For example,
the two-litrei63bhp diesel we had on test recorded an aver
age 38mpg against a posted 48.7mpg. Not bad, but nei ther is it something to shout too loudly about, either. Afteraweekspent driving
around in a two-litre i63bhp Sport NavI’m inclined to agree with those who claim it is up therewith the likes ofFord Fo cus, VW Golf and Vauxhall As tra, the main rivals. It’s well-built, both inside and out, with quality fixtures

and fittings and is not over priced: the range starts at £16,695.
All models come with a
range o f innovative gadgets and gizmos, including a sys tem which applies the brakes
ifitdetectsacollisionisimmi- nent and a hill holding func tion so there’s no roll-back on inclines. Other standard equipment in clu de s alloy wheels, air conditioning, trip computer, USB/iPod connec tivity, six-speaker audio sys tem, seven-inch colour touch screen and colour-coded door handles and mirrors. . Paying an e x tra £1,500 on top o f the base model gets dual zone climate con trol, automatic wipers and lights, rear parking sensors,
c ruise control and heated seats. The SE-L Nav and Sport Nav models come with satel
o f the postcode to be input - this makes it a fiddly exercise toprogrammeandirritatingif you don’t have thefull address. The power delivery from
lite navigation systems (the name’s a bit of a giveaway!) and Sport Nav also has the rather clever head-up dis play with the digital speedo displayed on a little plastic
screen right in the driver’s eyeline.
I take some issue with the
swankysatnavwhich, though pricey as an add-on, only al
lows the first four characters
the two-litre petrol we drove isn’t spectacular; the lack o f a turbo means the o-62mph sprint takes 8.2 seconds and needs plenty of judicious rev ving to get it up to speed. Therideisfirm and there’s
a lot o f noise from the ty res, the 18 inch alloys and thepoor road surface the main cul prits, but this a minor com plaint in an otherwise good all-round vehicle.
