These awards celebrate primary and secondary education across the East Lancashire area and we have been delighted by the interest and response.

Sponsored by Burnley College, the awards showcase and celebrate the very best students, teachers, schools and employees in the area. The campaign recognises the achievements that schools and pupils make within the education sector.on a daily basis.

Our panel of judges had the difficult task of sifting through all the


very worthy nominations and narrowing them down to the shortlists announced today.


The winners will be announced at the glittering awards presentation evening at Burnley College, Princess Way, Burnley on Thursday June 26.


However the Unsung Hero winner is yet to be decided and we want our East Lancashire News readers to select the winner. So please read


through the nominations listed over leaf and vote for who you think most deserves the title.


PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL OF THE YEAR AWARD Sponsored by Burnley Express


Jay Bowman - St James’ Lanehead Church of England, Primary School Jay is the Chair of our School council. He has been responsible for leading many initiatives over the Lent period. Jay has organised a variety of events raising over £500 for local charities. He has excellent relationships with children at all levels. He is always ready to help younger children, he is a willing listener, a trustworthy and dependable friend. Jay is a keen sportsman and represents the school at many different sports, always willing to try his best and never lose heart even if he finds some sports challenging.


Misty Taylor - Waddington & West


Bradford C of E Primary School Misty is the Rainbow Team Captain and represents the pupils in the yellow team on the school council. She is the Chairperson of the school’s Eco Committee, a member of the school choir, school history club, school newspaper editorial, rotakids and a playleader. Misty has represented the school in Catalyst challenge 2014. Has worked extremely hard and has achieved her own goal of attending CRGS next academic year. She raises money for charities outside school and has raised money for Sports Relief. Her school attendance is 99.9%.


Ethan & Declan Stewart Bastable Brunshaw Primary School Both brothers are both a shining example and an inspiration to the school. Tragically Ethan was injured and lost the sight in his eye and sadly his nana passed away. Ethan never complained and gave his all to his school. He is a testament to Brunshaw and he is a brave, positive and brilliant pupil with a beaming smile!


Declan equally.faced hardships and tragedies this year. He is an incredible young man who has striven to keep a beaming face through all his troubles. He represented the school’s football team on. numerous accasions and he has had the extra task of looking after his little brother. Both boys are a credit to their school and family.

Josh Connor - Colne Primet Academy


Josh is a year 10 student at Colne Primet Academy, he is extremely keen to immerse himself into school life and always helps to promote the school


-at open evenings. Josh is currently a member of the Youth Parliament for Pendle and hopes to be elected as Youth MP. Staff have always had a very good relationship with Josh and he always shows the upmost .respect for his teachers. Academically Josh gives 110% and is genuinely keen to develop his knowledge and has a healthy thirst to better himself.

Lomeshaye Junior School Lomeshaye Junior School are proud to be part of the Rag-Bag Recycling Scheme! Through working closely with the Eco-Warriors of Year 4, Lomeshaye has devised a recycling initiative in which the children can bring in any unwanted items with the knowledge that they are part of a fantastic cause! This being, items of a good quality are sent to Africa for the needy. Other items, which may not be in the best condition, will be sent for recycling, making items such as tea towels or cleaning cloths.

Primaiy Schools in Bamoldswick joined representatives of the town’s In Bloom group to celebrate the success of 2013’s pop-up planters in the regional Britian ih Bloom event. Pupils at primaiy schools in


. Bartick grew edible plants in the pallet sized planters, which included vegetables such as artichokes, beans and chives as well as insect friendly plants for bugs to teed from too. “We are veiy proud of the contribution from our school children”.

It is therefore our pleasure to sponsor the Sustainable School Award for the East Lancashire Education Awards. Farnell Land Rover show a real commitment and approach to sustainability having been named the 'Responsible Business of the Year' in 2013, by Business in the Community (BITC). Keaton Newcombe-Dickson - Hameldon Community College Keaton volunteered for a placement in Veka’s Rnance team. From day one he delighted us with his enthusiasm, putting his own time into the project too. Keaton’s placement was a great success, ending with a presentation to our MD, Chief Executive of Burnley Council and Business in the Community (BITC) Manager, no mean feat for anyone let alone someone of thirteen. Keaton captivated the 230+ audience with his natural style and humour, being approached time and time again by delegates offering their congratulations. Keaton has proved to be a fantastic ambassador not only for his school but also his town.


Justyna Miloszewska -Saints John Fisher and Thomas More Catholic Humanities College Justyna is a born leader. Her enthusiasm for everything she attempts is infectious. She is a delight to teach. She is a very academic girl who consistently excels in every subject area. Justyna is popular with all the students and is always the first to offer, help and advice for students within our school. She is a wonderful role- model for all her fellow students. She plays a key role within the school's award winning Young Enterprise Group and has been awarded the East Lancashire Entrepreneur of the Year 2014.


Jack Holmes - Shuttleworth College, Burnley


Jack is in Year 11 and he' is currently Head Boy at Shuttleworth College, Burnley. He has already achieved an A*gcse in Maths & English language, the - only pupil to get an A* in either subject at Shuttleworth. Jack’s reports are exceptional, he is always helping one teacher or another doing some kind of project for them. At the last school awards evening he got numerous awards including KS4 citizen of the year, that was given to him for all his help & contribution to the school. Outside of school Jack plays tenpin bowling for ■ Blackburn & Lancashire and has recently set up his own small printing business.
