Local author Keith Harwood’s latesttome isdescribed by the author as “a book to inspire, inform and entertain both game and coarse anglers".

The book explores the species offishwhichinhabitLakeDis- trictwaters.aswellasthepeo-

. pie who have fished for them, including the poet William Wordsworth and Hugh Falkus, the British writer, angler and Second World War pilot. Keith retired from Clithe

roe Royal Grammar School in 2012 after 37 years of teaching Classics. A keen all round angler for more than 50 years, he is a regular fish er of the Ribble, Hodder and Aire rivers as well as many of the waters of the Lake Dis-. trict. He is a member of both the Bowland Game Fishing Association and Ribchester and District Angling Club. Describing the back

ground to writing the book, Keith said: “The Lake District has inspired many a poet and writer, but it has also provided a unique and beautiful setting for anglers. “Indeed, it has been called

an ‘angler’s paradise’ and still merits that title. “Within it’s waters, becks

and lakes are to be found a variety of fish, some rarely' encountered elsewhere in the ; British Isles, such as the charr, vendaceandschelly-relicsof - the last ice age.”

to give ai history of Lakeland angling and its anglers. Few visitors today are aware of the commercial fisheries and the hook-making for which the area was once fafnous. Not many would know

that, in 2011,25,000 vendace fry were carried by llamas to Sprinkling Tarn or that in

2002 gunmen were brought into the Lake District to save Britain’s rarest fish (the schel- Iy) from extinction. How many would real
