More than half of firms expect to increasetheir workforce in the next year, although many are worried that “burdensome" employment regulations could affect their business, according to a new report
@ The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said a survey of 3,000 companies also showed that three out of five increased pay in line with or above inflation last year. Around 57 per cent of
those polled said they paid employees at least the Living Wage, with those in catering among the least likely to pay it to all staff.
GENERAL VACANCIES
Small and m ed ium sized businesses and those
‘ in computing, mining and energy and construction are most likely to increase their workforce in the next year. Firms voiced concern that regulations to increase
paternity leave and pay, shared parental leave and pension. auto-enrolment will have a negative impact on their business. Around one in 10
. businesses said they offered zero-hours contracts, and most believed that plans to ban exclusivity clauses which tie workers to one employer will haye no impact. BCC director-general
John Longworth said: “These results show businesses
remain optimistic about both growth and pay prospects for their staff, despite the slowdown in the economic recovery. “Smaller businesses,
particularly in the IT, energy and construction sectors are most confident about job growth, so it is crucial that those businesses are able to find workers with the right skills to meet that demand. “This relies on schools and
businesses working together to develop the talents of our youngpeople.
“Businesses are flexible in
their working arrangements, recognising that the well being of their workforce im p r o v e s b u s i n e s s

productivity and, in turn, has a positive impact on growth. “However, it is clear that
businesses are concerned that additional employment regulation, which can be time- consuming and costly, will affect their bottom line and hamper future jobs growth. “The major ity o f our

1 Tommi, “One of my main fo cuses for Sunday was my line -1 made an effort to try and use as much of the circuit as pos sible in order to carry more speed throughout the stages.” Just as Meadows and co
driver Ian Oakey were starting to climb back up the leader- board, their Nissan Micra would not start before stage 14. With help from other par ents and mechanics, the crew tried to get the car going but unfortunately a finish wasn’t to be, and the problem could not be cured in time.” Tommi is hoping to be

bunch at MyttonFold
John B e rry was thepick of the bunch when he won this week’s Winter Singles at Mytton Fold Golf Club.
His 32 points over the short ened 16-hole winter course was just enough to hold off both Frank Hindle, who finished second, and Paul Ashworth, who was third, fol lowing a card play-off. Just out of the prizes were
Frank Havard and Steve Wor- rall, who both finished just one point in arrears. Top lady on the day was
Brenda Griffith, with Joanne Allen second, and Allison Nuttall third.
There werejust two twos,
with Jean Van Boeckel (at the eighth) and Frank Havard (at the ninth) dividing the spoils. In the Winter Pairs, the De
Lacy pairing of Mick Mahon and Frank Hindle held sway with an excellent 40 points, with the ever jolly Wayne Ivinson and John Welch just two points behind. Peter Fox/Phil Ryan and
Gary Ashton/Nigel Fairhurst topped out the leading run ners, both pairings carding 36 points.
