The UK’s love affair with the Audi TT is set to be rekindled

. in 2015 when the first of the new-generation models find their way to customers in Jan uary.

. This iconiclittle sports car,

which is credited with chang ing' Audi’s fortunes when it was first unveiled in 1998, has sold more than 100,000 in the UK alone - more than any where else in the world. Although this, the third

generation, is a completely newvehicletothosethathave gone.before, there are, never theless plenty of nods to the first generation and even the original concept car which made its debutin 1995. ; This time around, though.

it looks more muscular with vertical style cues at the front and a far more prominent

. grille that is deliberately remi niscent of the R8.: Although shorter and nar

rower than its predecessor it nevertheless has a longer wheelbase owing to its short er overhangs. Internal "space is therefore

greater and, once the rear seats are folded flat, you have an impressive 305 litres of us able space (up from 219 litres) Scotland was chosen as

the" location for the UK press launch this week. Unlike Eng land,whichwasbaskinginun- seasonably warm weather, the whole of the country suffered from a deluge of storm-force rain and winds; roads were closed, trees fell down and massive puddles made driv- ine dangerous. '

Our choice of the quattro

all-wheel-drive model as our preferred vehicle was there fore a wise one., Despite the truly awful'

conditions it remained firm-, ly planted on the road and didn’t miss a beat - no matter howhard the rain came down. I always reckon I can tell

within a few minutes if I’m go ing to get on with a particular car- in theTT’s case it was just seconds.

As soon as I got behind the

wheel I felt at home. The seats, driving position and location of the instruments all posi tioned for maximum comfort and enjoyment. Innovative technology is'a

given whenever Audi show case a new model. Segmented headlights that

react to oncoming traffic are narticularlv imnressive.

However, one of my favour-

itebitsofkitthistimearound is the driver-focusedvirtualcock- pitthatcompletelyfillsthedriv-

' er’s instrument binnacle. - There are different views:

classic gives speedo and rev counter prominence but switch to infotainment mode and they recede into the back ground-navigation mode is particularly impressive. There are two engines at

launch, front wheel drive and quattro models, two trims, Sport and S-line and both’ manual and the excellent S

SURPRISE

tronic which really does takes some beating.

Prices range from £29,770

to £35.335. Our test car had a further £10.000 of goodies

included; fancy seats £1,390, comfort and sound package £1,590 and technology pack age £1,795 just a few of many worth mentioning.

Mercedesannounce all-electric B-Class

Mercedes is to bring an all electric version of the new B-Class to the UK next year, with a drivetrain developed by Tesla.

The B-Class Electric

Drive will be priced to fall in line with high-end die sel models after applying the Government’s £5,000 plug-in car grant, making it atemptingaltemativeforur- ban families. Mercedes is making ini

ogy has only been in develop ment cars, so this is the first volume production Mer- cedes-Benzelectriccar,”said

AngusFitton.PRmanagerat Mercedes UK.

“Withmanymanufactur-

ers nowjoinlng the electric and plug-in hybrid market, Fitton explains Mercedes is trying to encourage take-up by keeping compromise to a minimum. “We’re looking at this

being roughly the same as a B 200 CDI with the auto matic gearbox, so i f you live in an urban area there’s the choice,” he continued. “There’s no sacrifice on boot space or versatility, andpeo- ple are less willing to make sacrificesjust because it’s an electric car. An in-house Mercedes

app has already been devel oped that allows owners to remotely keep tabs on the Electric Drive’s charge sta tus, predicted range and more.

Home charging solutions s

will not be included with the * B-Class Electric Drive, leav ing customers to source a wall-mounted chargerfrom

an energy supplier of their choice.
