Brockholes has received a Certifi cate of Excellence for the second year running from Trip Advisor, after scoring an average of four out of five stars. It is thelatest in a long line of awards the Lancashire Wildlife Trust reserve has received since it opened
two years ago. And it comes a few weeks before the reserve starts to open its gates on Friday evenings

A Lancaster auctioneer and assist ant land agent is meeting farmers in Cornwall next week to explain the benefits of the mule sheep. Ian Atkinson, 23, from Scorton,
near Garstang, hopes his visit will increase interest in the specialist
sheep sales at North West Auctions . in Lancaster and J36 where he works. He said: "The aim is to explain the many virtues of the mule sheep
flocks, which are helping to drive the thriving sheep industry in the North of England. Mules combine the hardiness of the Swaledale with the production benefits of the Bluefaced Leicester. They require little interven tion at lambing time and the ewes'- good mothering instinct and plentiful milk supply means they quickly ma ture and provide good carcase qual ity and good lambing percentages."

'U v i 1 •Yfj ^ ISLAND SANCTUARY
A small island on a Lancashire nature reserve is proving to be one of the most important areas in the United Kingdom for breeding waders. The island in Number One Pit at
Brockholes, off the M6 near Preston, has been a nursery fora remarkable number of birds over spring this year. Avocet, curlew, redshank; ringed
plover, little ringed plover, oyster- catcher and lapwing have all bred on the island. Another wader, the common sandpiper, has also made its home there.
Brockholes reserve officer Duncan
Goulding said: "The island has been alive with chicks. Lapwings have been most productive with 16 pairs breed ing. We cleared the island of vegeta tion, which made it good for birds like the lapwing, which like to see for a distance when they're nesting." He said that ox-eye daisy, which
grows quite tall, provides a canopy above the chicks' heads hiding them from birds of prey and crows and added: "The water is quite shallow so' they can wander in and out safely."

SAVING SKYDANCERS An RSPB initiative focussed on pro tecting England's most threatened bird of prey has reached the final of this year's National Lottery Awards in the Best Education Project category. Skydancer, a four-year project,
aims to raise awareness and promote the conservation of hen harriers across the North of England. It is one of seven finalists - selected from more than 750 applications - go ing head-to-head in a public vote. The winner will receive £2,000 at a BBC-televised award ceremony in September. GOLDEN DAVE
A well-known RSPB warden has retired after 50 years. David Mower, warden at Leighton
Moss and Morecambe Bay nature reserve, marked five decades with the nature conservation charity in the same year as the Silverdale reserve celebrates its 50th anniversary. He began volunteering at his local RSPB reserve in Suffolk, when he was
just 14, before becoming a member of staff at the age of 18. His career then took him to RSPB reserves
around the country before he arrived at Leighton Moss 28 years ago. David said: "It's been a privilege to work for such a wonderful organisation that achieves so much for wildlife. During my career, I've seen the RSPB grow from a small society to the UK's larg est nature conservation charity. With the struggles facing the environment today, it's more important than ever ‘ that wildlife receives such support, and I'm proud to have been able to contribute to the fight to save it."

Blanaid Denman, Skydancer project officer at the RSPB, added: "Hen harriers are amazing birds, yet very few people have heard of them or their plight. Skydancer is helping to change that." Public voting for the National
Lottery Awards runs until July 23. To vote for Skydancer, visit: www.
