Becky’s break ,

ECKY, a nine-month- , old working border

■mjh collie, was rushed isfesissr down to the practice

one Monday morning with a badly broken leg. Radiographs revealed that Becky had broken her tibia and fibula. The break was in such a location that it was n o ta b le to be repaired easily surgically. Asa

amputation was not an option and, at this point, Becky's chances o f returning to work seemed very slim.

The vets devised a plan to try

to save Becky's leg. We realigned the leg under traction and placed it in a plaster cast - a technique rarely used as it can be fraught with complications. We kept Becky in the hospital on

cage rest and, after three weeks, we took further radiographs of her leg which showed us that her bones were beginning to heal. Tragically, just two days before

the cast was to be removed, we saw the tell-tale signs o f complications. The cast had slipped, compromising the blood supply to Becky's foot. It seemed she had fallen at the final hurdle. Her main pad and one

toe had to be debrided (unhealthy tissue was removed) and, while the

fracture had now fully healed, we began the painstaking process

of trying to save Becky's foot. Becky needed daily dressing changes with Manuka Honey

- a traditional dressing used . to p romote wound healing. Amazingly, in just a few weeks Becky's fo o t began to heal and she was able to walk on it again. Throughout her entire stay in the

practice Becky tolerated multiple dressing changes and her cage rest w ith o u t complaint - making her a pleasure to care for. In total, Becky stayed at the

practice fo r five weeks and endured visits to the practice three times a week fo r several more. Today, Becky is back at home

with her owners enjoying an active lifestyle - walking five miles per day! Hopefully, she will soon return to her passion o f herding sheep. To this day, we have no idea

how Becky managed to break her leg, b u t with time, dedication and copious amounts o f tender loving care she has made a miraculous and complete recovery.
