Why we need the Jobcentre
Elizabeth Kennedy (58) start ed a new job two months ago incustomerserviceatthe local Sainsbury's store.
She was offered three jobs on the same day arid credits this to the combined efforts ofthe Jobcentre and the Salvation Army Job Club. “All my adult life I’ve
worked to support my fam ily," she said. “I was a chef for most of
my career and worked long hours to keep us afloat. Then I became unwell and lost my job.
“As soon as I was better 1
was back looking for work andveryquicklytheJobcentre found me a post which I admit I rushed into accepting. “As a result it didn’t work
out and I was back looking for ajob again. “As I was keen to do any
thing to help me get ajob, when my advisor at the Job- centre mentioned the newjob club run by the Salvation Ar my I went dong. “I quickly got the confi
dence to searchforjobs online and use the mapping tools, so _ I only applied to places I could actually get to. 1 was also given

help to apply forjobs. “I built a good relationship
with my advisor at the Jobcen tre and I think it was down to this along with all the help from the Salvation Army that I got ajob that suits me and I’ll hopefully keep. “I’m loving having a job
again and I’m going to keep going to the job club to help

other people get back into em ployment. “I’m worried about the
Jobcentre closing in Clithe- roe because I know that with out the close relationship with my advisor I may not have got thisjob. “Having to travel to Black
burn to visit the Jobcentre would be difficult for me for
many reasons and I think it would be harder to build up a good relationship with an advisor. As the Jobcentre and
job club are in the same town, they’re able to work together to support people and this could be lost if the closure happens.” Jordan White (24) has lived in Clitheroe all his life and

has been unemployed for two months. “I really want to get a good
job with a future,” he says. “If I get something that
suits me I know I’ll be able to stick at it, and that’s what’s so good about the Salvation Ar my Job Club, as they’re helping me to work out what I want to do and find the right jobs. “So, I think the Jobcentre
should be extending services not the opposite like here in Clitheroe. Being unemployed is hard and if the Jobcentre does close I think things will only get harder.” Captain Elizabeth Smith,
commanding officer of the Salvation Army Corps in Clit heroe, helped launch the weekly job club about a year ago.
.. • She says she was looking
for ways to tackle the prob lems faced by the local com munity when the idea of ajob club idea was first mooted. The corps was providing
food parcels which led Cap tain Smith to discover the em ployment problems faced by Clitheroe residents. After worki ng closely with
the town’s Jobcentre the Sal- vationArmy discovered what
would help people to get ajob and therefore turn their lives around. . C ap ta in Smith said:
“The reasons for unemploy ment are complex and differ widely from person to per son and from town to town. “It was clear to us that while the Jobcentre in Clitheroe offers a good service it isn’t
able to go far enough to tackle some of the issues which make it hard for some people to get ajob. “One of these is a lack of
computer access and skills. Thanks to the kind donations of local people we have 11 lap tops and offer help with using them and assistance in com pleting online application forms. We’re also able to offer guidance in where to look for
jobs and support. “Simple things like sug-
gestingjob seekers volunteer in our shop go a long way in helping them get back into employment because it im proves confidence and helps to get the long term unem ployed out of a rut. We also have someone here from Cit izens Advice and are able to point people in the right di rection of other services that
