A Ribble Valley hotel has been named one of the nation's best, following inclusion in The Sunday Times' Ultimate 100 British Hotels 2014.

Stanley House Hotel and Spa, Mellor, was reviewed and selected from destinations across the UK and is the only Lancashire hotel to make the cut.

Now in its second year, The

Times.prize list recognises establishments with char acter, good service, com fort and value. The lavish list places Stanley House among Raymond Blancs’s Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, nationally acclaimed Pig on the Beach, Dorset, and the host of the Ryder Cup 2014, Gleneagles in Scotland. The l is t also placed

Stanley House in the top five for the ultimate spa destination. Following her visit, the specialist review er said the former manor house was a prime location to “check in and chill out” and that “traditionalists will like the mullioned windows and open fires of the grade II list ed manor. Others will prefer the 18 contemporary Wood land rooms. But everyone will love the spa.”

Sue’s great run raises £600 to help sufferers of diabetes

Diabetes sufferer Sue Riley has raised more than £600 for Diabetes UK after tackling the Great North Run at the age of 65. Sue, of Chatburn Park

Drive, Clitheroe, took part in the Bupa-sponsored run at Newcastle last month - her first half-marathon - and fin ished in two hours 19 minutes. “I felt incredibly proud

when I crossed the line,” she said. “The long hours of training

I’d put it had been worth it.” Sue took up running less

than two years ago at the Clit heroe Rub Club that meets every Monday at 6 pm at the Castle gates. She said: “It’s a fantasticgroup and that’s what got me started.” Sue chose to raise mon

ey for Diabetes UK because she has Type 2 diabetes and found the Ribble Valley Dia betes UK group to be helpful and supportive. She was one of a record 7,000 runners sup

porting Diabetes UK in this year’s nationwide Bupa Great Run series in cities from Port smouth to Edinburgh. Money raised willhelpsup-

port the3.2 million people di agnosed with Type x and Type 2 diabetes and the estimated 630,000 people undiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Anyone who was unable to

donate to individual runners before the run can support Diabetes UK. Visit: www.dia- betes.org.uk/Donate

complement the location. “The thermal suite is sur rounded by a pond where ducks chase between the reeds, and the slopes of the Ribble Valley provide a sooth ing backdrop,” she stated. Stanley House Hotel and

Spa is set in 54 acres of Ribble Valley countryside. The 17th Century listed

building has been trans formed over the past 10 years to offer 30 world-class bed

rooms, stylish dining facili ties and a multi-million pound spa.

General manager Philip

Wharton said: “Our continu ous investment into world class facilities along with creating a unique short stay experience has resulted in a resort-standard venue. “We are proud to put

Lancashire on the national map and be recognised for our commitment to creating an experience like no other.”
