■ ■ HERITAGE TOUR: Participants taking part in the Bowland Classic Heritage Tour in September last year

JUST launched, the new 2013 Festival Bowland events pro gramme has something for every one, so why not get your calendar out and start planning? That is the invitation from the For

est of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, which has just launched its new festival guide following the success o f last year’s events. The AONB partners have worked

- i ' .

together with landowners, local ex perts and businesses to provide a wide variety of events and opportunities

for people to explore the area’s dis tinctive qualities and share with oth ers what makes this area such a spe cial place for people and wildlife. This year’s events include both old

favourites and new suggestions, rang ing from strenuous hikes over the fells to more moderate days discovering some o f Bowland’s beautiful rivers, valleys and woodlands. Fun children’s activities, the op

portunity to learn new skills and the chance to look out for some of Bow- land’s special wildlife will also be on offer over the coming months. To mark Bowland Hay Time - the

AONB’s partnership project with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust - there will be lots o f events to help people discover and enjoy one of the area’s rarest habitats, upland hay meadows.

These species-rich, traditionally

managed meadows are a riot o f col our in the summer months and are an important part of Bowland’s farming heritage.

The Garstang Walking Festival

also celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2013, with 10 days o f guided walks planned, including the annual 41-mile Wyre Way Challenge.

AINEW kind o f adoption that of fers a better start in life for babies IS being pioneered in Lancashire. Lancashire County Council

r.pabies come intd ourcare at birth' or soon after I f their parents can

tor Babies 0-2”, the prqgramme is m Its early stages, but social work ers at the county council hope it could make a real difference for babies and very young children Who cannot remain with their own

not care for them; They’re then looked after by foster carers while we work with their parents to see if they can go home. “ I f this isn’t possible, the fam

ily court process can take many months, and after that, o f course, the baby has to move again to his or her adoptive parents. “Our new programme does this

differently. It places a baby or very young child straight away with their prospective adopters, who are also approved to act as foster carers, while the birth family is as sessed and the court makes a deci sion. “This docs, of course, mean that.

: there’s a degree of uncertainty for ,- the adopters, because they can’t

■ be' completely sure" they’re going-; ;to keep the baby-there is always ■ ' a chance the child might go home.'

.

But we feel that it’s better for the adults involved to bear that risk and uncertainty and for the baby to have the chance of a more se cure start in life; if they are adopt ed, they’ll have been with their adoptive family throughout. “We know this isn’t for every

one and that some peoitle don’t feel they could cope with the risk that they might have to give up a child they had grown to love. But

we already have a few couples who feel that, with support, they could have the resilience to tiy this route to adoption. And, of course, they

would have the benefit o f caring for a child from theyeiy start.’i ■ ■ ; - • For'ihore information aboutv the.prbgramme: or-abbur^dop-?;

DIG IT: Children enjoy a family archaeology workshop in Tps- side during last year’s Festival Bowland.

Introduced last year, the “Discover

Bowland...” talk and walk series fea tures again in 2013, this time focus ing on garden design history, medi eval deer parks and archaeology. So if you’ve ever wanted to dig that bit deeper into the area’s past, then these days could be just right for you. For those looking for family-

friendly events, the festival has every thing from animal mask-making and Earthwalks to pond dipping and mini beast hunting, plus the AONB’s very first Hay Time Family Day in June,

which promises flowery fun for eve ryone!

There will be many opportunities

to enjoy some creativity in 2013, and a number of artists are offering events within the festival programme. I f all this activity helps you to work up an appetite, then this year’s programme also has lots o f opportunities to com bine a walk or workshop with the chance to sample some of the area’s cafes, pubs and restaurants. • For more details about the

events included in Festival Bow land 2013 call the AONB office on 01200 448000, e-mail sandra.silk(ffi Iancashire.gov.uk or visit: www.forestofbowland.com
