Success at Crufts for Sarah (and Friski)

A CLITHEROE print manag er’s “four-legged friend” Frisia, a four-year-old Labrador Cross, proved every dog does have its day after walking away with a

top prize at Crufts. Friski finished second in the grad

uate obedience class in the show, presented by the Kennel Club, last weekend at Birmingham’s NEC!. Owner Sarah Woodward, who

works at her family’s Paper Cup Company in Clitherbe, fought off fierce competition from the other entrants in the Young Kennel Club ring to climb the podium. And the 20-year-old, of Guy Street, was left beaming with pride

at Fri'ski’s performance. “It’s my second time competing at Crufts and I’m absolutely ecstatic with Friski,” she said. “As part of the competition, we

had to complete tests in heelwork on lead, heelwork off lead, re-call, retrieve, one minute sit, stay and two minutes d o ^ , stay. “I’m delighted with what we

achieved. I just go out and enjoy myself, she does the same and this time we came second which is amaz ing when you think about it. “The whole event is quite a lot for

dogs sometimes, but she coped well with being in the ring. Hopefully, we OBEDIENT: Sarah Woodward will go on and come back next year with Friski at the world-fa- to go one better.”

mous Crufts, (s) Winifred’s life as chaperone to the stars

NEVER have so many been chaperoned by so few when Mrs Winifred Dawson addressed Clit heroe and District Probus Club. Retiring from life as a teacher,

she was asked by a friend if she would like a job as a chaperone, looking after eight to 15-year- olds while.they were appearing on stage or screen. Reluctant at first, she agreed

to be available “occasionally”. The next day her first assignment started and ever since she found herself much in demand, mingling ivith stars of TV, film and theatre as she travelled widely, looking after a fascinating collection of budding actors and actresses.

Whalley Primary School, Dr Steve Austin, has warned parents over book ing holidays in term time without a valid reason.

For those under the age of

eight their parents or guardian must always be present. Sixteen and over are deemed able to look after themselves. Between eight and 15 requires a registered chap erone to be present at all times to look after the child actor. This job inevitably brought her

out to be “tomorrow, in Cape Town”; the large black limou sines invariably used to take her and the child to the studio -

the

larger the limo, the quicker the traffic gave way! After a brief question time the

into contact with the more mature actors in various productions, a side to the job which she found as equally interesting as dealing with her younger charges. Surprises were plentiful - how

nice the real person so often is when compared with their TV character; how the call to chaper one someone “tomorrow” turned

Dr Austin says that neither the govern ment nor the local authority will accept the cost of a holiday as an excuse.

haye been generous so far in authouris- ing anything which is five school days or less. I am very grateful to those narents who extend

“I cannot continue to authorise such re quests unless a valid reason is given. I would much prefer to have a face-to- face discussion with parents, a phone call or an email, in stead of receiving the form on my desk with no opportunity, for conversation.

“I am getting quite a few holiday forms where the cheaper cost of holidays tak en during term time is cited as the main or only reason for the holiday request.

“When you fill in a holiday request form or ask permis sion for the children to be absent from school, you must write about the ex ceptional circum stances which have led to the request.

“Please help the school to maintain our outstanding at

a particular school holiday period - in other words taking a two-week family holiday where only one week or less is school term time.”
