Three men escape fire in flat
THREE people were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inha lation after a fierce blaze at a second floor flat in Clitheroe.

, Fire crews were called to the incident on Station Court, off Station Road, just before 11-30 p.m. on Saturday. On arrivai at the scene, they witnessed police rescu-
ing a man from the flat, which was already
well alight. Six firefighters wearing breath ing apparatus spent three hours tackling the lire, which had severely damaged the premises. There was also damaae to an external lobby area.

Bowland Young Farm ers’ club went to Black burn for ice skating. They mostly managed to stay upright and all enjoyed themselves.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 4th when the talk is entitled “Don’t you wish you hadn’t said this” by Cliff Astin.
The annul village Cancer whist drive will be held on Wednsday, May 30th at 7-30 p.m. in the vil lage hall, the entrance fee is £3. Donations and prizes will be collected by Mrs Joyce Lillburn.
Mr Etherington told mem bers that throughout his working life he was a painter and decorator, but when he retired he attended a beginner’s course for wood carv ing. He passed his City and Guilds and went on to teach a class at Lan caster and Morecambe College that was only duetorunforsix weeks, but eventually lasted for three years. Dur ing this time he carved pictures and scenes of rural villages, inside cottages and beautiful individual pieces, using various kinds of wood. He explained how to be gin carving with a solid block of wood, eventu ally creating fascinating sculptures. He brought along a number of carv ings to see and to feel. Thanks were given by Mrs Claire DalSn.
Next week’s meeting is a ' joint regional meeting hosted by Saralesbury YFC at Osbaldeston Riding Centre. It is on Monday, March 19th and is a talk from the chief officer of the spe cial Constabulary for Lancashire. Members to meet in the village at 7 p.m.

Young farmers Members of Chipping Young Farmers’ Ciub took part in their annual muck haul round the village and thanks go to all those keen garden ers who bought some of Chipping’s finest manure for their sum mer gardens. The club has also donated some of the same to the Chip ping in Bloom commit tee for their use to help the village’s hopes of further success in the competition this year.

To meet Government require ments he had to record absolutely everything involved in his business. Temperatures, quanti ties, hygiene and cook ing times are just the tip of the iceberg. Little wonder that he has a 12- hour working day.

Six members, including Federation Denman representative Kay Hopkinson, attended the LFWI spring coun cil meeting in South- port. The guest speakers were TV chef Rosemary Shrager and NFWI chairman Ruth Bond.
A competition for a poem entitled “Dem Bones” caused much hilarity and was won by Cath erine Taylor, with Ann Connell, Ann Marie Proud and Cynthia Openshaw tying for sec ond place.
Thanks were expressed by Barbara Dewhurst to Roy for a thoroughly enjoyable and enter taining presentation and members sampled bite sized morsels of smoked chicken, pate and cheeses.
Roy encouraged every one to support butchers - any butchers - rather than supermarkets and pointed out that your butcher can tailor your order to your specific needs.

Popular Chatburn butcher Roy Porter kindly stepped in at the last minute, as the original speaker was no longer available. He gave a fascinating taik’ about his life and “45 years in a 14’ x 14’”, the history of his shop and other shops and build ings in Chatburn and the change in shopping habits resulting from the advent of fridges and modern lifestyle.
The next meeting on April 12th will be a theme night: “The 2012 Olym pics”. Members will be put into teams and chal lenged to five different games. The competition will be for the winning team and the event will close with a medals cer emony.
Any outstanding prizes and groceries for the bingo night on March 22nd should be taken to Catherine Taylor by tomorrow, Friday at the latest. The evening is a sell out and those at tending are reminded to provide their own drinks and glasses.
