FRIENDS who got together for a fun ■ evening of fund-raising were bowled over by the amount raised for the Help Whip Cancer appeal. Mandy Wilson, of Siddows Avenue,

Clitheroe, held a Pampered Chef evening at her home, with the aim of all funds raised going towards the can cer appeal and the Rosemere Cancer Foundation in Preston, where she herself

received treatment last year for breast cancer. Mandy said: “We were absolutely over

the moon that we were able to raise over £500. Along with the Pampered Chef event, we also held a raffle, sold cakes and had a good-as-new stall. “I would like to thank all those who at

tended, as well as those who donated and provided items for the raffle and stalls.”

PEOPLE in their 80s and 90s who grew up in Mellor are being invited to share their childhood memories of the area. Mellor Library is collecting sto

ries from people who were chil dren in the village during the 1920s and ’30s. The aim is to produce an oral history to add to the library’s community history collection. Emily Hurt, Lancashire Coun

ty Council’s senior librarian at Mellor, said: “Our community history collection includes lots of pamphlets and books written about Mellor by local residents and is very popular with visitors arid local schools. “However, the information tends

to cover the physical history of the village, such as the landscape, de tails of housing and the changing face of businesses. “I thought it would be really in

teresting to collect people’s stories as well, and an oral history project seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

“A number of our regular library

users are aged 80 or over, and we’d love to hear from them or from anyone else in that age group who grew up locally. “We want to hear all sorts of

memories of being a child in the village, for example what children did for fun, what schooling was like in those days and where people got their first jobs.” Emily added: “The interviews

will be recorded on CDs that will be available for people to borrow from the library and listen to at home. “There will also be a website for

the project where people can listen to excerpts.” The library has recruited six

PARENTS a re being urged by N o r th West A m b u la n c e S e rv ic e (NWAS) to follow a few simple safety tips to ensure this Halloween is

a treat for their children. Traditionally, calls to

NWAS soar on Halloween, but the service believes this could be avoided if the public followed simple safety advice.

Be safe at Halloween by Faiza Afzaal NWAS is urging parents

to make sure they always accompany children when they are trick or treating, to make sure children carry a torch, glow sick and wear reflective clothing to make them visible to drivers. Well-f ittin g masks,

costumes and shoes should be worn to avoid blocked

vision, trips and falls, and children should learn how to cross the road properly as more accidents happen in the dark. Director of Emergency

S e rv ic e a t NWAS, Derek Cartwright, said: “Halloween can be an exciting time for children and young people, but edinbined with the dark nights and bad weather, children can be very

vulnerable to avoidable accidents. “Emergency calls to the

ambulance service soar at this time of year. We are urging parents to ensure their children are safe so they can enjoy the night, and ambulances are free to attend life-threatening emergencies.
