Grant should help Connor move on up!

WADDINGTON’S Connor Byrne was one of 14 athletes to be awarded £500 in the latest round of the Lancashire Rising Star Fund at County Hall in Preston last week. Connor, 15, represented Great Britain in

mountaineering at the National Youth Open in July, where he came second overall and was the first Great Britain boy in his age group. He will be moving up to a new age group

next year, so the grant will be spent on training and competitions to ensure he is in the best position to retain his place on the youth team.

The Lancashire Rising Star Fund,

in association with Lancashire Sport Partnership and the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund, awards grants of £500 to individuals to cover costs such as travel, training, accommodation, competition fees and equipment, specialist coaching and other specialist support such as physiotherapy and nutrition advice. The night also included the launch of the

Lancashire Sport Makers programme, which aims to inspire more than 1,OOQlpeople in the county to get involved in sport,7 wFtffeadi of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over. Sport Makers is part of the Places People

Play legacy programme, which is bringing the magic of a home Ojympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country
