Pupils reap benefits of shopping vouchers

Schools on to a winner i| m o t o r s Hillendale

LOCAL schools and clubs are set to receive new equipment following fur ther success for the Tesco for Schools

, and Clubs Scheme. Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, and

representatives from four of the schools taking part, visited-Clitheroe’s Duck Street Tesco store to celebrate the na tionwide scheme, now in its 20th year. The programme enables schools that

have signed up to the programme to re deem vouchers from Tesco purchases

against a range of products and equip ment, from iMacs and drum kits to gar den tools and tennis rackets. Shoppers in the local area were all

offered the vouchers when paying for their shopping over a 10-weck period, which they then donate to a school or club of their choice. The schools and clubs were then able to choose what equipment they wanted, to benefit and educate the children involved. Clitheroe store manager,

David Pollitt said: “Tesco for Schools and Clubs is a scheme which my team here are proud to be a part of. ■ “Thousands of custom

ers have been collecting the vouchers to help their chosen venue get the equip ment that they need. It shows what great results can be achieved when the whole community gets involved.”

From asylum to hospital it’s a fascinating history

AUTHOR Mark Cornwell gave an illustrated talk to Clitheroe Civic Society on the County Asylum at Whalley, better known today as Calderstones Hospital. The hospital has had vari

ous names over the years - The County Asylum, Queen Mary’s Military Hospital from 1914 to 1918, and the present one, Calderstones Hospital. When plans were introduced to

build on the site at Whalley there were many objections, just as to day with the present housing plans. One complaint stated that it would have to be built on heavy clay, most unsuitable for “lunatics”. It appears that all complaints

fell on deaf ears, and the 2,000 bed asylum was built on land that was purchased at £110 per acre, well above the normal price at the time of around £30 per acre. The speaker went on to describe

how the buildings were built using the on-site clay and a brickworks, which produced some 25 million bricks that went into the site’s construction. It had its own gas works, and was

self-sufficient in producing its own clothing and shoes and brushes in the various workshops around the site, while a kitchen that fed the populace was also provided. There was a school, isolation hospital, football and recreation ground, staff housing, and its own electri cal power house. Very early on, when the site was

being constructed, a railway line was built to help to bring in various supplies, and it was in use until it closed in 1952. The spur line (off the main line of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) was built near the village of Barrow. In the Great War of 1914 to 1918 - it was used to bring the wounded

troops to the re-named Queen Mary’s Hospital. Mr Cornwell showed many pho

tos of the area at that time, includ ing photos of its own station at the hospital.

- After a lively question and

answer time, the packed audi ence showed its appreciation. For more information on The Calderstones Hospital and its rail way, Mr Cornwell can be contact ed on 01254 830754. The next meeting of the civic

society will be held at the Ribble Valley Borough Council chambers on November 7th at 7-30 p.m, with a talk by the Rev. Andy Froud on Science, Faith and Magic in Restoration England. All members, guest and visi

tors are warmly welcomed to all. the civic society meetings, usually held on the first Monday of every month.

KIA Motors (UK) Limited is to add a new top-of-the-range ‘4’ version, complete with in creased power output and high level of specification, to its cee’d and cee’d SW line-ups

from 1st October. First launched this year on the

Lj 0

pro_cee’d three-door hatchback, the ‘4’ version is a logical exten sion of Kia’s simple trim naming structure and sits above the exist ing T , ‘2’ and ‘3’ versions. Both the cee’d ‘4’ family hatch

back and cee’d SW ‘4’ family es tate car share the same 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine that produces 126bhp at 4,000rpm - up from 113bhp on other trim versions - and 1881b/ft torque (255Nm) from 1,900 to 2,750rpm. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a 4-speed auto matic transmission is available as an option on the cee’d SW ‘4’. Top speed on both ' manual

variants is 122mph with the 0- 60mph dash taking 10.6 seconds in the hatchback and just an ad ditional 0.2 seconds in the estate. C02 emissions for the cee’d ‘4’ are 119 g/km, placing it in VED band ‘C’, whilst the combined-cy cle fuel consumption figure is an economical 62.8mpg. A more sporting exterior ap- ;

pearance has been achieved with a set of 17-inch alloy, wheels, black bezel headlights and rear window privacy glass.,The side indicator repeaters have been integrated

into the door mirrors. ' , ' On the inside full black leath

er upholstery, combined with front heated seats, and a leather

trimmed steering wheel and gear- knob add a luxurious feel. Driver convenience has been enhanced by the addition of cruise control, with steering wheel mounted

. controls, and electrically-oper ated heated and folding door mirrors. High-tech features are in

abundance on the ‘4’. A seven- inch colour touch screen system acts as the infotainment hub and controls a fully-integrated colour satellite navigation system, com plete with European mapping, as well as the radio, CD player, iPod connectivity and Bluetooth hands-free systems. In addition, an advanced parking camera sys tem offers a colour view of obsta cles to the rear of the vehicle and is displayed on the same screen. The cee’d SW version adds the extra convenience of audible re verse parking sensors to this list. The cee’d ‘4’ and cee’d SW ‘4’

are available to order now and priced at £19,195 and £20,345 re spectively on-the-road. The auto matic gearbox option on the cee’d SW is priced at £1,100 whilst the sporty-looking pro_cee’d ‘4’ is also available at £18,995 on-the- road. As with all new Kias a seven

year, 100,000 mile, fully-transfer- able warranty comes as standard. For further information on the
