A WEEK of science-inspired projects, lessons and activities was enjoyed by pupils at St Leon ard’s Primary School, Langho. They joined in National Science Week with

a plethora of fun and educational activities de signed to inspire and increase their scientific un derstanding. The week started with a bang when Radio Lan

cashire broadcast live from the school during an introductory assembly in which Claire Holt, of Flash Bang Science, demonstrated a very noisy “whoosh bottle” . She was one o f several scientists

who visited during the week to promote science to the children. Claire, who is a former chemical engineer, is

keen to promote science to children, which she does by bringing a specially equipped mobile lab to schools. Over three days all the children in the school participated in exciting science experi ments in the special lab set up in the school play ground. Ambassadors from Astrazenica, Johnson Mat-

they and the Paramedic Service also contributed to the week with various workshops and talks. A

highlight was an open afternoon, which was well supported by parents, governors and teachers from other local schools, along with the Mayor o f the Ribble Valley, Coun. Lois Rimmer. During the afternoon the pupils demonstrated science experiments and engaged visitors in various sci entific activities. Refreshments were provided by the school’s new Let’s Get Cooking Club. Headteacher Mrs Anne Pickup said: “ The

whole week was a huge success and inspired the pupils through engaging them in exciting practi cal science activities”

Village’s new youth group is launched

A NEW group for young peo ple between the ages of 10 and 16 from Newton and surround ing villages has been officially opened by County Coun. Mark Perks, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for

young people. Offering activities including

sports and games, pool, table ten nis, table football, Playstation Con nect games, arts and crafts, hoard games, cooking and a tuck shop, the club will be open every other Friday evening between 6r30 and 8-30 p.m. The youth group, which will be

based at Newton Village Hall, is the brainchild o f local resident Sally Emmanuel. Sally wanted to do something for young people in Newton and the surrounding vil lages. Sally and Gaja Gannon, a worker

A N IC E LAN D IC district court ruling could recover Lancashire County Council’s money held in the

country’s banks. Lancashire County Council had

£6.436m with one of Iceland’s banks, Landsbanki, as well as£2.487m from the Lancashire Pensions Fund.

OFFICIAL OPENING: County Coun. Mark Perks with the young peo ple from Newton Youth Club, (s)

from the county council’s Young People’s Service met the young people in the area to ask them i f they would like a youth club. The answer was an overwhelming yes. ■ A t the meeting organised soon

after, the young people gave Sally and Gaja a long list o f what they would like to do. Sally worked with the young people and they elected a committee which consisted o f a chairperson, treasurer, tuck shop

organiser and activities organiser. Before opening the youth group, Sally put all the necessary paper work in place such as insurance and child protection procedures. She also realised that she could not open without some money for equipment and to pay rent on the village hall. The young people did some

fund-raising at the Hodder Valley Show last September and man aged to raise £200. The group was successful in applying for a grant o f £2,600 from Lancashire County Council’s YPS funds for voluntary groups. Ribble Valley Borough Council also gave the group £1,000 for equipment Speaking after the officially

opening. County Coun. Perks said: “ I would like to thank Sally and eve ryone else who has been involved in setting up this group. I have no doubt that the young people who attend will benefit hugely from the wide range o f activities on offer. “ I would also urge local residents

to get involved. I Imow that Sally is keen for parents and local residents to help support the group and vol unteer for some Friday evenings.” The group organised a disco to

celebrate 90 years of the village hall and will be running the raffle at the May Queen event in June to raise money for the youth group.

County’s frozen cash could be thawing The Icelandic district court has

now found in favour of councils and ruled that deposits placed by UK wholesale depositors have priority status in the winding up o f the two Icelandic banks, Landsbanki and Glitnir. Countv treasurer Gill Kilnatrick

said: “Obviously we are very pleased at the outcome. “Based on the current statement

of assets and liabilities of Landsban ki, we anticipate that we will recover between 85% and 90% of the value of our claim. ■ “This final fisure is still subiect

to confirmation. We are unlikely to find out until some time in the summer. An appeal to the Supreme Court is also a real possibility given the arhounts at stake. “We will continue our hard work

to recover as much of Lancashire’s money as we can.”
