Bacup...........................2 Clitheroe RBL............. 3 CLITHEROE RBL finally re corded their first victory cf the season after 10 attempts with a hard-fought victory over Ba cup.'

v . ■ The visitors began veiy

brightly and carved out numer ous. opportunities before the

deadlock was finally broken. On 15 minutes Haslam

broke down the right and his cross found Meyler, whose shot was blocked, ' only for Brunskill to pounce and find the bottom corner. Not long after Meyler him

self made it 2-0 as his delicate turn and shot from the edge of the box found the back of the net to put the visitors in control. The visitors squandered a

number of chances as they piled on the pressure in search of a third and killer goal. It didn’t come, and instead

on the 35-minute mark the host broke and Harltebuiy’s attempted back pass was under hit, and the centre forward rounded the keeper to tap into 1 an empty net. This upset the rhythm, and

score was only 2-1 - the visitors should have been out of sight early on, although they quite easily could have found them selves level in the 10 minutes before the break. In the second half, the vis-

iruiy. And in the Third Division,

Table Tennis League, Clitheroe LMC A made it three wins from three in the Premier Division after a fine undefeated performance from Mark Hanson helped them overcome Ward & Stobbart 24-16. In the First Division, Brierfield. aided by David Eastwoocl and Jack Keogh, both undefeated, saw off the Wballey Eagles 26-11. In the Second Division, Whalley Kestrels'beat Slayers 27-7, on the Back of three wins from Phil Grace and a 100%

IN the FH Trophy Prelimi nary Round, Whalley Hawks enjoyed a 7-2 win over Hynd- burn TTC C 2, but Whal ley Eagles went down 9-0 to Hyndbum TTC F. In the East Lancashire

the home side took full advan tage, pressing forward for the equaliser. Somehow at half-time the

tors started very nervously but some resolute defending from the back four prevented the scores being tied . . The visitors came back into the game and soon had their' third, although somewhat fortuitously. Wright won a header deep

in his own half, the home side failed to clear, and Threlfall raced forward to pounce oh. a short pass as he beat the keeper to the ball to tap home into an empty net

r The two-goal cushion was

to the game, although the visi tors had a goal disallowed as Aspinwall was judged off-side. They also spumed easy

chances as Meyler headed wide from three yards. .The score rather flattered

the home side as .it should have been well and truly over as a contest after the first 20 minutes. , Man of the match was Dearden. Hopefully this will improve

the side’s confidence, as there next trip is an away game to Carder Vale on November 19 th.

short lived as the home side broke, Clitheroe failed to clear their lines and were punished for not closing down as the ball was hit from 20 yards, only for Scriven in goal to parry the shot straight into the path of the forward, who had the easi est of jobs, stroking the ball home with 10 minutes to go. This made for a nervous end

THERE were medals and speeding tickets galore as Clitheroe Dolphins headed to Blackpool for the North Lancashire Gala. A total 37 swimmers

' made the journey, aiming ; toimprove on their per sonal best times and show all the other clubs in North

: Lancashire what they are capable of, and they succeeded! Swimming against much

bigger clubs such as Preston, Blackburn and Blackpool, the Dolphins held their own to bring back 22 medals in total from the Level 3 meet in the Palatine 25m pool. All swimmers who com

peted improved on previ ous times in at least some of their events, which goes to show the improvement in the swimmers. In total, Dolphins brought

back 12 gold, four silver and six bronze medals, along with a fantastic 22 speeding ' tickets, which are. awarded for swims faster than the upper limit for qualifying time. The medallists were asfol-

Waddington, fresh from his exertions in New Zealand. In the pack, both John Procter and Lewis Williams returned from injury whilst veteran Roger Holmes donned his boots for the first time in months in the hooker position. Clitheroe started brightly,

putting the hosts on the back foot for the majority of the first 20 minutes. A missed

penalty from long range was" the first chance for points, but this was quickly followed up by the game’s first try, captain Wilkinson taking a sweet short ball from scrum half Wood 30 yards out before outpacing the defence to flop in by the right' comer flag. However, it simply proved

to inspire the opposition who went oh to boss the majority of the remainder of the first half, scoring two converted tries in quick succession to lead 14-5. Captain and coach high

lighted the need for better support play and improved communication in • defence

during the half-time huddle and started the second half looking like they heeded that advice.

The passing was crisp, the support there in spades and

. when Bolton did manage to get the ball, the Clitheroe defence was stout. This higher level of performance led to a penalty chance that was expertly con-- verted by centre Thatcher. With around 20 minutes

of the second half played, Bolton knew they had to up ., the pace and made a number of inspired changes in person nel. As they proceeded to grab the game by the scruff, Bolton

were also aided by a Clitheroe player being binned following a previous warning for lack of discipline. They simply couldn’t match

Bolton’s pace and renewed determination at the break down, especially from the players who had recently entered the fray, and conceded another two converted tries as well as a penalty during the final 25 minutes to make the final score 31-8. The seconds have a crucial

home game against Fleetwood this Saturday, with the firsts also at home to Camforth (games kick-off 2-15 p.m.)..

WHALLEY Golf Club hosted their Annual Men’s Dinner and Prizegiving presen tation recently. The evening was a great success, with all members who had won throughout the

year receiving their trophy or prize. The full list:of people honored at the awards was as follows: Frank Longworth

Trophy - Donald Blanch; Spring Trophy - Andy Wray; Scratch Trophy - Rob Andrew; Long Handicap Trophy - Ken Bolton; Millennium Trophy - Mike Conroy; Robert Lightfoot Trophy - John Farnsworth; Len Rowbottom Trophy- Miles Wade; Veteran Bowl - Gordon Taylor; Arthur Longworth Cup - Andy Wray; Leslie Haynes Trophy - Neil Pollard; Vintage Decanter - Malcolm Salmon; Hitchen Trophy - Dan Jones; Brandreth Rosebowl - Danny Liles; Ultima Trophy - Neil Ashworth; Presidents Putter - Richard Ferley and Nick Williamson; Postlethwaite Cup - Danny Liles; Fourball Trophy - Chris Blackadder and John Sherry; Handicap Reduction Trophy - Aaron Ripley; Eclectic Trophy - Chris Blackadder; Golfer of the Year - Danny Liles. Last Week saw members of Whalley Golf Club compete in The Hangover Stakes. The competition, which is directly after the Mens’ Dinner, is always a lively event

and needless to say, not all members made it out onto the course. The conditions were fair, with pockets of rain scattered throughout the morning. The champion on the day, with a highly impressive round of golf, was Paul Chalker,

who shot a superb 95-27-68. Runner-up was Stephen Crossley with a lovely one under par 85-14-71, and third

was Mel Earle with a solid level par round 79-7-72. There were only two twos recorded going to Stephen Crossley and Dave -

Westwood. ® GLYNN Watson led the field home as Mytton Fold Golf Club’s winter

season got into full swing with its second round being held on a very damp Langho course. With just 16 holes to complete, Watson, playing off a winter handicap of 10, still

managed an outstanding 35 points, pushing club captain John Beriy, with 33 points, into second place. Phil Hammond came in third, just one point behind, and took a share of the twos

pot with John Berry and Richard Greaves. ■ All the twos were, unusually, scored on the 170-yard 11th hole. Bob Devine finished in fourth place, just beaten for third in a card play-off. In the ladies’ section, Doreen Hammond joins Judith Kay at the top of their order

of merit. In the winter doubles, it was a win for the pairing of captain John Berry and secre

tary Dave Clegg who came home with an impressive 40 points. Ian Hopcraft tried to better his eagle of last week when he let go his tee shot on

the eighth. Unfortunately his mis-hit drive only tnckled to the waste container by the 10th

ladies’ tee, but he did win this week’s ‘nearest the bin’! Another to miss out was Tony Wilson. Having only entered the doubles competition, he then went on to card twos at

both the first and the ninth. An interesting route from tee to green was also mapped out by competitions and

handicaps chairman, Peter Main. . His journey on the ninth was made via the ponds on the seventh!
