.RIBBLE Valley, has not been included on the route for the London 2012 Olym pic Torch Relay-to the dis
may of council chiefs. The London 2012 Organis
ing Committee revealed on Monday the 1,000 cities, towns and villages on the official route of the Olympic Torch Relay, but neither Clitheroe nor any other town or village in the Ribble Valley is included on the list. “We are extremely disap
pointed that the Olympic torch relay route will not include any part of Ribble Valley,” said Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil deputy leader Stuart Hirst. “I have no doubt that this
disappointment will be shared by residents and fellow coun cillors, and I have spoken to 1
Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, who has also expressed dismay.” The 70-day Ol
ympic Torch Relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall, on
the morning of May 19th, 2012. The Ol
ympic Flame will then travel an esti mated 8,000 miles
. around the UK, giving thousands of communities and individuals their mo ment to shine as it comes to a place near them. Coun. Hirst added:
“As well as being the official centre of the
kingdom, Ribble Val- • ley has shown its abil ity to host events with

Council has been working hard to engage with the Olympics, by running a series of Inspire projects to mark the run-up to the event, and for a small, rural authority with limited re sources our efforts have been - sterling.
“Due to logistics and fund
ing, we recognised that it.was unlikely Ribble Valley would have been chosen to host one of the stopover events, but felt
that the borough was unique enough, as centre of the king dom, with a strong Royal con nection and the largest rural community in Lancashire, to have at least been on the route. “ We will be seeking an early
review of the decision and will be making strong representa tions to the North West Olym pic Committee.”
.i The London Organising
Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) this week told The Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times it had worked closely with representatives from Lancashire to devise the route, which will see torch- bearers pass through Chorley and Ormskirk, before moving on to Morecambe, Lancaster, Garstang, Fleetwood, Lytham St Annes, Preston, Accrington, Burnley and Rawtenstall.
“LOCOG has worked to gether with representatives
■ from the local authorities and sports, culture, heritage, and tourism sectors, forming a North West Torch Relay Ad visory Group,” explained a spokeswoman for LOCOG. “We tried to devise a route which goes to as many places as
