BILL Backhouse (53), of Waddington, is cur rently undertaking the biggest challenge of his life aboard the boat The Singapore, as he takes part in the Clipper 2011-12 round the world yacht race. This week, we catch up with Bill as he meets the
boat coming into port from leg three, in Geraldton on the western coast of Australia, and preparations
begin for the next leg of the race and Bill’s own' per sonal adventure: He wrote: “Last evening, she came into Gerald
ton, a little bloodied, but not bowed. A few of us were lucky to cadge a ride on a fast RIB to escort her into port.
. \
“Although this leg was Singapore’s worst result of the race so far, we’ve resolved to put that aside and swiftly move back up the fleet. . ' “Today we got stuck into essential maintenance
and deep cleaning jobs, so I now feel a real part of my yacht. More graft tomorrow and Saturday be fore the ‘ofF on Sunday, at 1-30 p.m. local time (5-30 a.m. GMT). The passion to do well is tangible and a great feeling is building amongst the crew.” Reporting a couple of days later, Bill continued:
“It’s a chaotic scene dockside as 10 yachts are read ied for sea and another 3,000+ nautical miles of trans-ocean racing to New Zealand. In the last 48 hours, we’ve stripped winches, fitted water pumps, ran lines and provisioned for 24 days, amongst vari ous other tasks. “We’re a little depleted with only 14 crew as five
have dropped out with various injuries. So, here we go then. Very excited and pretty nervous to boot. The game’s afoot...”

I She explained the city was being smartened up, but not yet,on the scale of the preparations made for the Olympic Games. There was a noticeable absence of private cars on the roads, but the many red taxis zoomed around among the rickshaws and bicycles. - -■

Naturalists, Peter Guy brought a film “A Bowland Year”, which was made through his work in conser vation for United Utilities. The result was a testament to
Mr Guy’s skill as a photographer, superb composition of landscapes, close-ups and details of the wild life. He began in winter with sheep
nibbling a way through snow. A few weeks later the birds started to return from the North - Canada Geese in great numbers taking over Stocks reservoir. Feeding sta tions were provided in woodlands for small birds and woodpeckers and the squirrels seized their op portunity for an easy meal. Conservation work involved

dealing with pollution from peat on the moors, dispersing the wa ter by making dams from heather bales and metal piles. Tree planting, linking wood
lands into a continuous belt, hedge laying competitions and heather burning and felling of diseased trees all contributed to the health of the land. Lambins and nesting was next
on the “menu”. The heavy rain of this area could wash out nests so the birds had to start again. Hares were quiet after their box ing displays, but the profusion of lapwings, curlews, oyster-catchers and hen harriers gave an insight into the richness of bird life in Bowland. The nesting cycle of a Peregrine
Falcon was shown in great detail - from five eggs laid to feeding and fledging the remaining three chicks. Sheep shearing, costly to operate had found new markets in roof insulation! August, a quiet month, gave op
portunities for satellite tagging of chicks before migration to south ern lands such as Africa - involv- ing many thousands of miles. The Hodder Valley show with
its demonstrations and competi tions is ever an important tradition
