G R E E N -M I N D E D s ch o o lch i ld r en from St Mary’s, RC Prima ry. S ch o o l, Chipping, scooped a top prize for their recycling efforts. -A total of 31. primary
schools in the Ribble Valley have been enthusiastically collecting old batteries as part of a “Tune into Battery Recycling” scheme. These schools were all
hoping to win a prize of a laptop, or vouchers for school sports equipment, as a reward for their efforts. The top three performing
schools have won a prize. St ■ Mary’s RC Primary School was named the top rccycler ■ and received a laptop com; puter, provided by Valpak Limited and presented to the school by County Coun. Mike France at a special prize-giving event at the Woodlands Conference Centre. St Mary’s RC School, Os- baldeston, was placed sec-
m
ond, winning £200 worth of sports equipment vouchers, and St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Hurst Green, bagged third place, receiving £100 of sports equipment vouchers. The school rankings were
calculated by dividing the total tonnage of batteries collected by the number of pupils in the school, which ensured that the success of the pupils, rather than the
size of the school, was re warded. The county council is working in partnership with Valpak Limited, which under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regula tions 2009 provides battery recycling services. Coun. Mike France, lead ,
member for communities and partnerships, said: “Tlie county council has been working hard to encour-.

age more recycling of used household batteries. ■ “As part of those efforts, the council introduced a recycling initiative for pri mary’schools in 2004 and it has proved a great success.- All the schools taking part in this scheme deserve to be praised for their recycling ef forts and I would especially like to congratulate the win ners from each district.”

SILVER-GILT MEDAL: Winners John Foley and Kate Lawson with Carol Klein from Gardeners World at RHS Tatton Park Flower Show.(s)
Silver success for nursery
HOLDEN Clough Nursery has been awarded a Silver-Gilt medal at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show after being given only two days’ notice that it had been allo cated a last minute space. John Foley and his partner Kate
Lawson took over Holden Clough Nursery, Bolton-by-Bowland, in early 2009 and this is the first time that they have exhibited at this pres- tigous flower show. They pulled out all the stops and managed to get the display constructed in time for judging on Tuesday. The display showed a colourful
array of summer flowering peren nials, featuring his crocosmia col lection which John is well-known for after being featured on BBC Gardeners World in 2005.
; As well as Crocosmia the nurs ery also specialises in perennials, shrubs, alpines and other hardy garden plants grown at the nursery and provides useful advice to cus tomers on purchasing plants for their garden, and a worldwide plant mail-orderservice.
' The nursery is now in the process
of redevelopment and being given a new lease of life with the current construction o f an additional car park, a new nursery shop and also future plans for a small tea room. ; To complement the work at
Holden Clough Nursery, John also runs Holden Clough Landscapes which is a successful landscaping business carrying out all aspects of garden design and maintenance throughout the Ribble Valley.
