have faced all of the top five teams in .' the Ribblesdalc Cricket League J n ; as many i: weeks, picking up two wins in the process. .T h e ' latest came against , Ribblcsdale Wanderers, on Sunday with the other coming against Read at Whallcy Road three weeks ago.

. • He said: “We’ve played all

the top sides lately. We’ve played Read twice, Padiham, Clitheroc . and Ribblesdalc in the last four weeks and Baxenden not so long before that as well. To be honest I don’t think Ribbicsdalc are in with a chance of winning the league and I don’t think it will be Read cither.

- : _ . “At this s tag c il’d have to

say Padiham. I think a lot of it will depend on who Clitheroe bring in as sub pros because their pro (Tom Hardman) is out for the season. 1 believe they’ve got Anwar Alt in for. the final three .games of the season who is a quality pro. I t ’s very much between Clitheroe i and Padihani but I ’d have to stretch for Padiham.’ . ■ ■ “They’ve g o t a ■ bit of

momentum going and they’d : be the ones I ’d put my money on. They bat a long way down, Kashif; Siddique bowls tight . and there’s plenty, of others who can do a job .” ' Whalley certainly tested

league ' leaders Clitheroe ; on Saturday b u t ' ultimately - fell to a five wicket defeat. Professional Kaniran ■ 'Younas ' was in astonishing form with the bat as h e 'fe l l ju s t two runs short of a century before taking two wickets in ! reply. However,. despite Simon Gorton adding another three . wickets, ClifheroC: surpassed • the 158 run target. • ,

!. • / However, they , knocked

Ian Britcliffe’s side down to size on Sunday. Whalley . set a very achieveable 133 run target but battled valliantly with the ball and in the field to oust their opponents for 80.

David Howard starred, claim- ■. ing 5-51. Palmer added: “ It was

a very • enjoyable • weekend really. I was quite happy with

our performances .on both days so all in all it’s been quite pleasing. We’ve played, some good cricket. The win on : Sunday was-! great and I tliink we were robbed a bit on Saturday when the rain came down in their innings. - / ; - “The ball was like a b a r of

soap so it skidded onto the bat and made batting a bit easier.- ; The ball didn’t turn like it ' did during our innings b u t L thought we hit a good total.”

: CONFIDENT Ribblesdale Wanderers captain Ian Britcliffe insists his side’s ■bubble hasn’t burst.

leaders Clitheroe. However, Britcliffe still

has the winner’s, trophy in- his sights. He said: “Our. little bubble popped : a

bit over the weekend. Unfortunately there w a s , only one or two decent pertormances either day but you certainly couldn’t call them - a team effort. It’s a shame because we are capable of much'better than that; we’ve beaten every team above us at least, once this season apart from Clitheroe. ■ “I’m'really disappointed

because th e : double-header weekend came at the wrong time; for us. We had four lads away and it’s hit us. We were very frustrated and it hurts- and it will probably

keep on hurting until; we

. play Bamoldswick at the .weekend when we can do something about it.” Britcliffe added: “If we

get beat this weekend then I’ll start worrying but we’ve only dropped to fifth; it’s -

just a shame we couldn’t pick up a win. We can prob ably only afford to lose an o th e r two but we are capable of putting another- run of four wins together again. We are still target ing a top four finish and the Lancashire Gup but I ’ve still not stopped dreaming about winning it.”; ,

CRICKET And with sub pros secured

for the coming weeks, follow ing the injury of Chatburn Road paid man Tom: Hardman, things are starting to slot into place. Dibb said: “It was a great

weekend for us and the two wins were certainly vital. On Saturday we showed a lot of

heart because they were going well with-their pro (Kamran Younas) on 90-odd but we’ve done well to restrict Wlialley to : 158. ■ We’ve managed to chase that-total down which was a great effort. Sunday was

, a massive win for us as well against a very good side. We , bowled and fielded brilliantly which is what’s been winning us games recently.” Dibb added:.-“We’ve got

some big games ahead where we have to play both Baxenden ■ and Padiham but we are just taking it one game at a time. We are not playing with any pressure because everything we are doing is just a bonus. At the , minute the league is still wide open.” Clitheroe have secured the

services of South-African pro fessional Burton de Wett for the weekend fixture ^ against

CRICKET READ' skipper Chris Holt

' has his ‘fingers crossed’' that rivals Clitheroe hit a bad patch before the season’s conclusion.

...... An unfortunate mid-season

slide seems to have hindered the Whalley Road side’s title hopes and a 26-point gap has now opened up between them selves and Peter Dibb’s league leaders. However, Holt is adamant

WM

that the Chatburn Road outfit will slip-up sometime soon. He said: “We do keep thinking what could have been if we had have picked up another two wins anywhere down the line but wc arc still in with a shout. Clitheroc might sta rt losing games now they have to bring sub pros in so fingers crossed they will slip up a t some point. Read face a three week

. and Holt knows that could be •the season’s ‘make’ or ‘b reak’ period. “I know there’s teams capable of beating Clitheroe in this league,” he said. “We’ve got a massive stretch of games coming up soon which will give us a clear idea of where we stand a t that point. We

ju s t need to fake some confi dence into that run of games starting with Cherry Tree at the weekend.” Holt had a good weekend

on a personal level after firing 75 runs against Earby and an emphatic unbeaten 105-run total in victory over Edcnficid which he followed up with two wickets. Holt added: “I t ’s been a 50/50 weekend really. We should have won on Saturday but the weather didn’t help us with that. Our professional Jon Harvey picked up an injury when he was batting so he didn’t bowl or field. But everyone was chuffed to pick

- up a win on the Sunday so we ju s t need to keep our heads down and enjoy the rest of the season now.

. ■

“ Harvey . is back a t the weekend though so his injury wasn’t as bad as we first thought so that’s given every one a massive boost. Cherry Tree are a'good young team but if wc perform to mour capabilities then I know we can win. I t ’s been a little bit

. frustrating liitely and every one is feeling that way but we’ve got over our bad patch now and hopefully it’s time for Clithcroe to have theirs.” Elsewhere, James Watson’s' Salesbury remain cemented

, to the foot of the Ribbicsdalc Cricket League fable a f te r ' their match against Cherry T r e e ! was abandoned on

.Saturday while they were soundly beaten against Settle on Sunday. ■ They go into the weekend’s game against Baxenden jus t six points behind Great Hanvood. ‘
