STUDENTS at Clitherbe: Royal . Grammar School enjoyed an Indian culture day.as part of a week of edu-.; ■ cational activities. : Each year group enjoyed a wide • range of activities in the same week ■

to avoid disrupting the normal school timetable.

. ■ • ; •. : Pursuits included playing sport

and going on trips. Year 10 pupils, for example, enjoyed a trip to Liv erpool to attractions such as The

Beatle’s Story museum. Year Seven pupils also partici-'

pated in a community day, which included local pensioners learning language skills before enjoying a tea dance with cake baking.

The week-long range of special

end-of-term activities for the pupils was organised by school secretary Kathryn Kinney along with Dr Peter Halstead, who is head of the main school.

worthy of pride of place in anyone’s shop window. The I exquisite and

. time consuming detail which had been lovingly poured, into many of the items on display left visitors and judges stiinned. In opening tlie show, Mrs Pam Jelley looked back ■over four d.ecades’ of the event and ;

the Lancashire WI Federation’s 90 years. ; Two of the competing institutes,

Balderstone and Downham, could, she said, trace their roots back to 1920. And, in 1931,‘ one institute sent £5 to the Ghanpllor of the Excheq uer towards the reduction of the na tional debt. Grindleton WI formed in 1932, Waddington in 1946, with Rimington a year later. A Down- ham member, a Mrs Hargreaves, achieved national fame after writing

. an essay which was selected to go fonvard to the world essay final. In 1955, Hurst Green WI was formed with Billington and Langho in 1959 and Simonstone with Read in 1963. Fence WI was launched in 1972, ‘ eight years prior to the Lancashire

Federation’s diamond jubilee. ■ The standard at Saturday’s show had, said Mrs Jelley, amazed the

judges. Several had remarked that the range and quality of the exhib its continued to exceed all expecta-; tions. As in every show, the judges’ comments proved to be a major talk ing point. Not all exhibitors, or visi tors, were in agreement with their. deliberations, but many were able to learn from the judges’ remarks. Refreshments and demonstra

tions attracted many visitors, while a new aspect of this year’s show was a small stall selling some of the goods produced by Wl members. Mrs Jel-

. ley conveyed her thanks to all those who had helped to organise the event, especially the school’s care

taker. With scores of cars parked in the school playground, she praised those members and husbands who had helped to control the traffic in a bid to alleviate congestion. This year’s guests presented the

prizes and included the Kibble Val ley Mayor, Coun. Lois Rimmerand her consort, Gordon Rimmer; dep uty Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Simon Entwistle, Lancashire Federation chairman of shows Audrey Weath- ^ erill, Edisford Primary School’s sec retary Cath Rogers and former edi tor of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, Vivien _Meath. Area show secretary Bonnie Kramrisch collat ed the numerous trophies and was profusely thanked for her unstinting support.
