ummer holidays used to be a nightmare for Clarissa Langland, 38. She dreaded having to juggle work while looking after her two

children, Jonah, 9, and Aaron, 10. But when she signed them up to a local swimming

school two years ago, with the idea of getting the children more active, little did she realise they would not only get fit - but friendlier, kinder and calmer. "It was remarkable how much the boys

changed,” says the Northumberland-based office assist^L

“They grew physically stronger, of course, but the biggest ; ^ , change was in their:maturity. Theyeamed the fep e c t of their peers, mabe;new ; friends, gained .

of them are school age. In fact, mos t. ; lifeguarding courses and weekly swimming

lessons are aimed specifically at the younger : generation. Children as young as six months can be introduced to swimming through the nationwide ■ ? Starfish Programme (starfishswimming.org), while :

children from eight to 12 can learn how to become ■Rookie Lifeguards' through the Royal Life Saving . Society (www.lifesavers.org.uk), ' Swimming is a cardiovascular sport that bums more calories and works more muscle groups than any other

physiological and sociological boost. Because of the properties of water, you learn to balance your body against resistance, so children learn better coordination. "ITieir heart muscles develop, their lung capacity:: grovirs, and they experience less strain on joints and
