A FUNERAL will be held for gregarious: Clitheroe horse lover Mrs Catherlne.- Julie Hargreaves, who has

died aged 63. . Born at Manchester’s St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester,

■Catherine was the daughter of the late Richard and Edith Turner,’ who were Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe, and sis ter to John. . , ., The family, who lived in Lit- •

St Michael and St John’s RC Primary School,,Catherine went to Westholme School and then Notre Dame Convent and Girls’ Grammar School, Black burn.. At a young age, Catherine

developed what was to be a life-long love for horses. In- her teens, Catherine, who also used to help out in the family shop, started as a Saturday girl for Readwood Stables, Read, where she later taught horse riding. .,

in Clitheroe. The couple, who were married in 1968, lived at Albion House, -York Street,: Clitheroe, and subsequently had two children, Paul and. Claire. ■ A move to Town Green

House at 'West'Bradford, which had its own stables, al lowed Catherine to devote, even more time to equestrian teaching and she could often be seen giving lessons to chil dren on West Bradford’s mill - field. : Awarm and affable person-- ality, Catherine became heavily,: involved in Clitheroe’s French

■ Connection group, of which

: her husband is a founding member. In 1979, she was one of the first groups of wives to travel to Rivesaltes in France and would continue to be a

: core member all of her life. The original “party girl”,

Catherine was the first to lead a sing song or dance. She took lead roles in cabarets, which the group used to stage for their French counterparts, with a cabaret based on the Michael

.Jackson song “Thriller” being . one of the most memorable. : Catherine was also head cook, bottle washer and ticket seller for, the French Connec-

. lion’s cabaret night and char- . ity events.Cathcrine was in the Clitheroe Torchlight Proces sion in the 1980s as well. Tlie memory of her dressing

up as a .“can-can” girl to fit in with the French Connection’s “French Revolution” theme, is one friends and family will hold dear. However, in 1987, tragedy

struck, when Catherine fell ill after a family holiday to Malta. She was subsequently, diag nosed with Encephalitis, a rare and acute inflammation of the brain, which would affect her

. speech and comprehension for; the rest of her life.

the London Marathon three years ago to raise money for Encephalitis sufferers. In later life, Catherine was

an ardent fan of Blackburn Rovers FC. She was also elat ed to see the birth of her two grandsons William, three, and Thomas, who will turn one lat er this month. "Very determined with an
